Me encanta toda la comida que prepara Diego. Sobre todo los platillos que un amigo de la India le enseñó a preparar. Su especialidad es el potato curry (muy parecido al de la foto, pero con menos caldo). La foto fue tomada del blog A Mad Tea Party, y ahí mismo está la receta que utiliza los mismos ingredientes que usa Diego.

I love all the food that Diego cooks. Specially, the Indian dishes he learned how to make by watching one of his friends from India preparing them. His specialty is potato curry. It looks more or less like the one in the picture (which by the way, was taken from the blog A Mad Tea Party and I believe the ingredients listed there are the same ingredients that Diego uses. But his is less soupy.

Y aunque esto no es comida, me encantan los Miguelitos. Azúcar salada, enchilada y acidulada, cuyo ingrediente secreto parece ser el plomo. Pero no me importa!

I haven´t finished posting about my favorite things, and I´ve been tagged again.

Books
It´s sad but I´m not reading anything at the moment. I have several books that I borrowed from the library a month ago, but I haven´t have time to read them. So, I guess I´ll have to renew them in a couple of days. Some of the books I have are:

Poetry Speaks, an anthology which includes 3 audio CDs; The game of words by Willard R. Espy; and, Noah Webster and the American Dictionary by David Micklethwait.

Carmen reads Mafalda very often. And when she does, she asks me to read it with her.

Gainesville is Carmen´s favorite city because of her friends. She misses them.

3. Ciudades donde he vivido.
Por mucho tiempo Mazatlan fue mi ciudad favorita. Quiza porque ahi vivi de ninha por 7 anhos y eso es lo mas que he vivido en un lugar en toda mi vida.

La ciudad de Mexico es otra de mis ciudades favoritas. Ahi vivi 5 anhos mientras estudiaba la licenciatura. Me encanta la ciudad, pero ahora solo me gusta ir de vacaciones por temporadas cortas. Sobre todo en semana santa que se vacia la ciudad.

Cuernavaca fue otra ciudad donde vivimos muy agusto. Nos fuimos alla a escribir las tesis y viajabamos al DF cada dos semanas aproximadamente para ver a nuestros asesores. No teniamos hijas todavia y nos la pasabamos junto a la alberca tomando cervezas. Saliamos a pasear al centro, ibamos a bares o a comer al Marco Polo, un restaurant de comida italiana.

Gainesville, Florida, es otra ciudad especial para nosotros. Ahi vivimos por casi 7 anhos. Estudiamos la maestria y el doctorado, hicimos muy buenos amigos de todo el mundo y ahi nacieron nuestras hijas.

Pero, mi ciudad favorita es la ciudad donde naci: La Paz. Solo vivi 4 anhos ahi (durante la prepa), pero la mayoria de mis vacaciones las he pasado alla.

3. Cities where I've lived
For a long time Mazatlan was my favorite city. Maybe, because I lived there for 7 years when I was growing up (and that's the longest I've lived in one place.)

As an undergrad, I loved living in Mexico City. Now, I just love to go there on vacations, specially during the last week of Lent when lots of people leave the city to go to the beach or visit other touristic destinations.

Cuernavaca was another city where we had a great time. We went there to write our thesis and went to Mexico City every two weeks. We didn't have kids then, so we could spend most of the time by the pool drinking beers. We also went downtown quiet often to some bars and to an Italian restaurant we really like.

Gainesville, Florida, is another special city for us. We lived there for almost 7 years. We went to grad school, made very good friends from all the world, and had our daughters.

But my favorite city of them all -even though, I've only lived 4 years of my life (when I was in high school)- is La Paz. This is the city where I was born and where I have spent most of my vacations.

Me gustan las peliculas de Wim Wenders y las de Kenneth Branagh.

Tambien me gustan las peliculas donde sale Emma Thompson y en las que actua Gerard Depardieu. La ultima pelicula que vimos de el y Jean Reno fue "Tais Toi!" (2003) Buenisima!



2.Movies
I like Wim Wenders movies and Kenneth Branagh films.

I also like to watch movies in which Emma Thompson or Gerard Depardieu have played a role. The last movie we saw with this actor and Jean Reno was a French comedy called "Tais Toi!"

Steffi me invitó a participar en un juego que consiste en mencionar 8 cosas favoritas (trabajo, películas, ciudades donde haya vivido, series de TV, comida, websites, lugares y colores) e invitar a otros a participar. Pero para no hacer tan larga esta entrada, escribiré una o dos cosas por día. Y al final, escogeré a mis víctimas.

Steffi tagged me and I have to mention 8 favorite things (jobs, movies, cities where I've lived, TV programs, food, websites, places and colors) and tag others, so they can play. But, I don't want this to be a long post, so I'll be posting one or two things per day. At the end, I'll tag my victims.

1. Trabajos
Me encantó darles clases de inglés a niños de 3ro. de primaria en una escuela en el DF. Trabajé muy agusto con ellos.

Pero, prefiero dar clases de español y de linguística a nivel universitario. Por eso, estoy muy emocionada con las clases que estoy dando este semestre en la UNACH.

Sin embargo, mis trabajos favoritos han sido: 1) trabajar con mi asesor en la quinta edición del diccionario de español de la Universidad de Chicago; 2) trabajar como colaboradora en la traducción de Macbeth con la Dra. Enriqueta Gonzalez Padilla. Me encantaría tener nuevamente la oportunidad de trabajar en este tipo de proyectos.


1. Jobs
I loved teaching English to 8 year-old kids in an elementary school in Mexico City. I really enjoyed working with them.

But, I prefer teaching Spanish and Linguistics at the university level. So, I'm thrilled with the classes I'm teaching this semester at UNACH.

However, my favorite jobs ever have been: 1) working as an editorial assistant in the fifth edition of the University of Chicago Spanish Dictionary; and 2) working with Dr. Enriqueta Gonzalez Padilla, on the translation of Macbeth. I would love to have the opportunity to work in this kind of projects again.

A magical moment

Ayer en la tarde, me senté a leer con Carmen un libro en inglés, que es parte de una colección para pequeños lectores. Se los regaló Belkis, una amiga venezolana, cuando ya nos veníamos para México hace año y medio.

En varias ocasiones, intenté leerlos con Carmen, pero la verdad no le interesaban. Ayer intenté de nuevo y esta vez fue diferente. Al principio, Carmen no quería leerlo. Pero una vez que empezó, ya no quiso parar hasta terminarlo todo. Se moría de la risa. De más está decir que disfruté viendo cómo disfrutaba ella el libro.

Yesterday, I sat down with Carmen to read an I Can Read book. Belkis, a friend of ours from Venezuela, bought the Frog and Toad series for Carmen as a farewell gift a year and a half ago, when we were coming back to Mexico.

In several ocassions, I tried to read them to her, but she just wasn't interested. But yesterday, it was different. At the beginning, she didn't want to read it, but once she started, she didn't want to stop. She found the stories so funny that she kept reading until she finished the whole book. She was all laughs and smiles. She enjoyed the book and I enjoyed watching her.

Poetry Speaks

Last Saturday, I went to a breakfast and a meeting at one of my new jobs. When I got there, I was pleasantly surprised to see at the cafeteria, a huge display of books that the library had just bought. And my surprise just got better when I found a lexicography book, that I need for my dissertation; The Lord of the Rings with illustrations -for Carmen; and a poetry anthology, which includes 3 audio CDs with the poems read by their authors. I didn't get the CDs that day, though. I got them three days later.

I haven't been able to listen to them yet. Well, I listened to a couple of the poems already -my curiosity couldn't wait longer- but I'll listen to those CDs right now. The girls are sleeping and I'm waiting for Diego to come home.


El sábado pasado, fui a un desayuno y una junta en una de las universidades donde acabo de empezar a trabajar. Cuando llegué, me sorprendió ver en la cafetería, una exhibición de libros que la biblioteca acaba de adquirir este año. Y mi sorpresa fue mayor cuando encontré un libro de lexicografía, que ocupo para mi tesis; el libro de El Señor de los Anillos, con ilustraciones para Carmen; y una antología de poesía, que incluye tres CDs de audio con los poemas leídos por sus autores.

Los CDs no me los entregaron ese mismo día sino tres días después. Pero no he podido sentarme a escucharlos todavía. Bueno, ya escuché un par de ellos -no aguantaba la curiosidad- . Pero ahorita que las niñas ya están dormidas y mientras espero a Diego, me pondré a escucharlos.

Estos versos del Romance Sonámbulo de García Lorca se me vienen a la mente todos los días cuando voy por las niñas a la escuela y voy viendo el paisaje. Me encantan los cerros verdes de "Tuchtlan de los Conejos" (nombre nahuatl de Tuxtla; y que Radio Ombligo, el programa que escuchamos todas las mañanas utiliza para referirse a esta ciudad). Verde, verde, verde. Verde por todos lados. Extasiante.

Every day when I'm driving to pick up my daughters from school, these two verses of Lorca's poem "Romancero Sonambulo" come to my mind. I'm fascinated with the green hills of "Tuchtlan, Place of Rabbits" (this is the nahuatl name of Tuxtla, and that it's also the name that Radio Ombligo "the Belly-Button Radio", the program we listen to every morning uses when talking about this city.) Green, green, green. Everywhere I look, I see green. It's Enthralling.

What Language Should You Learn?

Encontré este test en el blog de Gisele, y como me fascinan los idiomas decidí contestarlo. Y resultó que debería aprender francés. El último idioma que había estado estudiando. Creo que debo retomarlo o seguir estudiando los idiomas que he dejado a medias.

Me encantaría poder hablar bien varias lenguas, pero aunque tengo facilidad para aprenderlas, no tengo el tiempo para seguir aprendiendo idiomas. Pero soy feliz estudiando otras lenguas para poder comprender y conocer otras culturas y poder apreciar otras maneras de ver el mundo.

Me gusta también descubrir cómo funcionan las lenguas en general. Por eso estudié mi maestría y mi doctorado en lingüística. Lo que más me gusta es la morfología (que estudia la formación de las palabras), la lexicografía (análisis y elaboración de diccionarios), el bilingüísmo y el uso de tecnología en la ensenhanza de lenguas extranjeras. Esto último es lo que más trabajo porque por lo general doy clases de español que me encanta.

I found this test in a Gisele's blog and I decided to take it because I love languages. Apparently, I should learn French. What a coincidence, this is the last language I had been studying. I should keep learning it or continue studying the other languages I have studied in the past.

I would love to be able to speak several languages, but even though I don't have a problem learning new languages, I do have a problem with time: no time to study languages right now. I like to know other languages to understand other cultures and to be able to appreciate other worldviews.

I also like to discover how languages work. That's why I studied my master's and my doctorate in Linguistics. The areas that I like the most are morphology (which studies word formation), lexicography (the art of compiling, writing and editing dictionaries as well as a discipline of developing theories of dictionary components and structures), bilinguism and using technology for language teaching. This is what I'm more familiar with since I usually work teaching Spanish.

rompecabezas // jigsaw puzzles

Armar rompecabezas era también uno de mis pasatiempos favoritos. Empecé este hobbie cuando tenía 8 años, cuando me enfermé de varicela. Sólo tenía un rompecabezas (de un chimpancé que andaba en bicicleta) y lo armé y desarmé muchísimas veces. Lo armaba al derecho y al revés; de izquiera a derecha, de arriba hacia abajo, de adentro hacia afuera o viceversa. Me inventé una y mil maneras de armarlo hasta que por fin me regalaron otro, y otro y otro... Este primer rompecabezas era de 25 piezas. El siguiente fue de 100, luego vinieron los de 500, los de 1000, los de 5000 y los de 10000.

Solving jigsaw puzzles was one of my favorite hobbies. I started this hobbie when I got chicken pox. I was 8 years old and had to be in my room for 2 weeks and I didn't have a TV. I had toys but I got myself entertained with a puzzle I had (of a chimpanzee riding a bike). I solved that puzzle so many times that I came up with many ways to solve it. I even solved it backwards. Then I think my mom realized I needed a new puzzle and after that I just kept getting one after another. That first puzzle had 25 pieces. The next one had a 100, then came those with 500, 1000, 5000 and 10000 pieces!

Ahora no tengo tiempo para armar rompecabezas, pero con el pretexto de tomar una foto para el blog decidí ponerme a armar uno y esto fue lo que sucedió:

Now I don't have the time to solve puzzles, but with the excuse to get a photo for my blog I decided to solve one and this is what happened:


Hubo contagio! Mi hermano y mi cuñada también se pusieron a armar rompecabezas y cuando terminaron fueron a comprar otros dos.

Mi mamá y las niñas también empezaron muy entusiasmadas, pero se cansaron pronto. Bueno en realidad estabam muy difíciles para ellas.

I got help. Mi brother and my sister in law started to solve puzzles. They solved two and when they finished them, they went to buy two more. My mom and the girls also wanted to help but only for a little while, because they were too difficult for them.

Coser//Quilting

Desde hace un año traigo el gusanillo de ponerme a coser (quilting). Antes de mudarnos de Gainesville, Claudia me invitó a ir a un grupo con el que se reunía para hacer "quilts" y me gustó lo que hacían. Pero yo andaba en proceso de mudanza y aunque fui a un par de reuniones no pude incorporarme. Un año más tarde aún siguen reuniéndose y haciendo cosas maravillosas. Me da una envidia ver las cosas que hacen. Y yo no he podido hasta la fecha sentarme y ponerme a trabajar en esto. En menos de un año hemos tenido dos mudanzas. Se me ha ido el tiempo empacando y desempacando y tratando de trabajar en mi tesis (proceso también lento, que nuevamente está en parado hasta que consiga los diccionarios que me hacen falta para empezar el análisis, y nos instalemos en nuestro nuevo hogar.

For almost a year, I've wanted to learn and do some quilting. Before we moved out from Gainesville, Claudia invited me a couple of times to join a group of quilters. I liked a lot what they did, but I was getting ready to move, so didn't get a chance to start anything. A year later, they still keep getting together and making wonderful things. I'm so green with envy to see all the beautiful things they make. And I still haven't found the time to sit down and start quilting. In less than a year, we've had two movings. I have been packing and unpacking all this time and trying to work on my dissertation (a slooooww process, that is on stand by until I get the dictionaries I need to start working on the analysis, and that we move to our new home.)

Lo tenía guardado en un closet desde hace años. Le faltó poco para terminarlo, pero ya no se acuerda para quién lo estaba haciendo. Así que me lo regaló para que yo lo termine. A ver si con esto empiezo por fin a "quiltear".

She has had it in a box in a closet for years. She almost finished it but still needs some work. She doesn't remember for whom she was doing it, so she gave it to me. Let's see if this helps me to get started with the quilting.

Me gusta... leer /I like... reading

Me gusta mucho leer, pero hace tiempo que no puedo darme ese lujo (no recuerdo cuándo fue la última vez que leí algo por gusto, aunque si recuerdo cuál fue el último libro que leí: La Mar del Sur.)

I like reading, but I cannot remember when was the last time I read something just for fun (I do remember what was the last book I read, though: La Mar del Sur, a novel by Francisco Rebolledo set in the XVI century.)

Ahora leo literatura infantil y a petición del público -léase mis hijas- leo y releo los mismos cuentos una y otra vez. Pero seguido vamos a la biblioteca o a las librerías para cambiar un poco nuestro repertorio. En la foto están nuestras más recientes adquisiciones. Hace como dos o tres meses, Carmen vio en la tele el inicio de la película de "El señor de los anillos". Yo le dije que no podía verla, pero que si quería le compraba los libros para leérsela. Y me tomó la palabra, y estuvo insiste e insiste en que los comprara. Pero no había encontrado una edición accesible ($$$) hasta hace un par de días, que encontramos dos de los libros a mitad de precio. Así que parece que pronto podré empezar a incorporar a nuestra lectura libros que me gustan. No creo que sea muy difícil. El periodo que más me gusta es la Edad Media o de temas medievales, sobre todo aquellas obras que tienen que ver con la búsqueda del Santo Grial y creo que a Carmen también le gustarán.



Now, I read children's literature and have to read the same story to my daughters for several days over and over again. But we go very often to the library or bookstores to keep my sanity. In fact, we just got those books in the picture yesterday. A couple of months ago, Carmen saw on TV the very beginning of the movie "The Lord of the Rings." I told her she couldn't watch it, but that I could buy her the books and read them to her. She agreed and had been asking me to get them ever since. I hadn't been able to buy them because they were really expensive, but a couple of days ago we found them and they were half the price! So it seems that I'll be able to start reading little by little, books that I like. I love Medieval literature, specially those stories about the Holy Grail, so it'll be easy to find something that Carmen would also like.

Okay, eso es todo por hoy. Ahora voy invitar a jugar a Nathalie, la hija de una amiga alemana.

un juego: cosas sobre mi // a game: things about me

Claudia me escogió para que participara en un juego que consiste en decir 8 cosas sobre uno y escoger a otras ocho personas para que hagan lo mismo. No pensé que pudiera escribir tanto sobre mí, pero pues parece que estaba equivocada. Así que cambiaré las reglas un poquito. Todos los días, publicaré una o dos cosas sobre mi e invitaré a jugar este juego a una o dos personas (dependiendo de cuántas cosas haya escrito sobre mi ese día). Voy a empezar.

1) Me encanta La Paz, BCS. He vivido en muchísimos lugares (lo más que he vivido en un lugar en toda mi vida son 7 años), pero La Paz es la ciudad que más me gusta. En esta ciudad nací, pero sólo he vivido cinco años de mi vida, sin contar todas las vacaciones de verano y de Navidad que he pasado aqui.

2) Me encanta el mar, el sol, el calor... Será por eso que me encanta La Paz? De niña podía pasarme el día entero en la playa, desde que amanecía hasta que anochecía. La mayoría de las veces regresaba a casa como camarón: completamente roja. No me gustaba ponerme bloqueador y aunque mi mamá me ponía en cuanto llegábamos a la playa, yo no volvía a ponerme el resto del día. Espero que todavía se tarden en aparecer las consecuencias por este descuido intencional.

Ok. Eso es todo por hoy. Voy a invitar a jugar a Resli y a su hermanita Lela Dorothy.


Claudia tagged me and now I have to play a game. I have to say 8 things about myself and when I finish I have to tag another 8 bloggers and ask them to play this game. I didn't think that I was going to be able to say that many things about myself, but guess what? I was wrong. So, I'm going to change the rules a bit. I'll post one or two things about myself every day, and I'll invite one or two people to play this game (depending on how many things I write about me in a given day.)I'll start.

1) I love La Paz, BCS. I've lived in so many places (the longest I've lived in one place is 7 years), but La Paz is the city that I like the most. I was born here, but I've lived here just 5 years of my life -and I've spent almost all my vacations here.

2) I love the sea, the sun, warm weather... No wonder I love La Paz! When I was a kid, I could spend a whole day at the beach. Most of the time, I came back home looking like a red lobster: completely red. I didn't like to wear sunblock and even though my mom would put some on me as soon as we arrived to the beach, I didn't put more on for the rest of the day. I hope that the consequences of this action don't show up yet.
