Regalos // Presents

Esta navidad nos la hemos pasado abriendo regalos desde el día 12. La Dra. Larson y el Dr. Mitchell nos regalaron unos chocolates y unos jabones de aceite de oliva de Palestina en una bolsita navideña de tela.

This Christmas we have been opening presents since the 12th of December. Dr. Larson and Dr. Mitchell gave us some chocolates and traditional olive oil soap in a nice Christmas bag made of fabric.

El 22 cuando Diego regresó de Morelia, nos dio unos regalitos que Rosi nos envió: unos angelitos que ella hizo para nuestro árbol, una esencia de naranja y jengibre, y unas bolsitas para las niñas.

On the 22nd when Diego came back from Morelia, he brought us some presents that Rosi sent us: six angels that she made for our Christmas tree, a sweet orange and ginger home scent, and two little purses for the girls.

El 24 en la noche, como es costumbre en México, abrimos los regalos de Navidad. Las niñas abrieron los regalos que les dimos nosotros, los de Carlos y los de sus abuelitos maternos. Los fueron abriendo en etapas y así los disfrutaron más.

On Christmas Eve, as we do in Mexico, we opened our Christmas presents. The girls opened presents from us, from their uncle Carlos, and from their maternal grandparents. They opened them in stages and that way they enjoyed them more.

A nosotros, Jindra nos regaló un libro de fotografias de Florida, una fotografia de ese mismo fotógrafo y un CD de canciones antiguas de Moravia que él mismo interpretó al piano, cantó y grabó.

Jindra gave us a book, a picture from that photographer and a CD with old Moravian folk songs that he recorded himself in his house.

A Diego yo tenía pensado regalarle la última temporada de Los Sopranos, pero él se la compró unos días antes de que yo la comprara. Así que no le tocó regalo, sólo fotos viejas de nosotros, una de ellas enmarcada.

I was planning to give Diego the last season of The Sopranos, but he bought it. So this time he didn't get anything, just old pictures of the two of us together and one of them in a frame.

Diego tampoco tenía pensado regalarme nada, pero a última hora me sorprendió con un collar y unos aretes de jade y ámbar.

Diego wasn't planning to buy me anything, but at the last minute he surprised me with a green jade & amber stone necklace with a pair of earrings.

Al día siguiente, a las niñas les amanecieron sus regalos de Santa Claus y el 26 llegaron los yayos (los abuelos paternos) con más regalos para las niñas y para nosotros. Muñecas, ropa, y cremas. También abrímos regalos que mandaron mis papás, que a las niñas les mandaron unos relojes y a nosotros más cremas y lociones.

On Christmas Day, the girls got their Santa Claus presents and the 26, their paternal grandparents arrived with more girls for everyone. Dolls, clothes, lotions. We also opened some presents my parents sent us with them: watches for the girls and more lotions and colognes.

Y hoy, recibí un paquete de Japón, de Reichi, una amiga que conocí por internet. Me envió una tarjeta, un brazalete, un cubre-tetera, unas carteritas japonesas para las niñas, un memo pad y tela. Lindísimo todo.


And today, I got a package from Japan, from Reichi, a blogger friend. She sent me a card, a bracelet, a tea-cozy, two little Japanese purses for the girls, a memo pad and two fabrics. Lovely!

Noche Buena // Christmas Eve

Por lo general pasamos la Navidad en La Paz, pero este año no fuimos. La pasamos en nuestra casa en Tuxtla y tuvimos dos invitados: Carlos, primo de Diego, y Jindra, un matemático.

Pasamos una velada muy agradable. Las niñas estuvieron entretenidas bailando, abriendo regalos, jugando y pintando. Y nosotros pudimos platicar, cenar y escuchar música agusto, sin interrupciones. Y así nos amanecimos. Las niñas se acostaron alrededor de las 11, pero nosotros seguimos con la plática hasta las 4:30. Bueno, Diego y Carlos se acostaron hasta las 6.

We usually go to La Paz for Christmas, but this year we stayed home and had two guests: Carlos, one of Diego´s cousins and Jindra, a Mathematician.

We had a really nice evening. The girls were happy dancing, opening presents, playing and painting. And we were able to talk, eat our dinner and listen to music without interruptions. The girls went to bed around 11, but we stayed up until 4:30. Well, Diego and Carlos went to bed at 6.

Por fin tenemos nuestro arbolito en casa. Digo por fin porque fue toda una odisea conseguir un árbol de Navidad en estas fechas. Estaban casi agotados, tanto los naturales como los artificiales. Muy poco de donde escojer. La gente realmente empieza cada vez más temprano sus compras navideñas.

We finally have our Christmas tree. And I say "finally" because it was an odyssey to get one. We went to several places looking for natural and artificial trees but in most places they were sold out already. Can you believe it? Well, maybe you do. It seems that now people do start their Christmas shopping really early.

Fiesta de Carmen//Carmen's Birthday Party

Hoy le festejamos a Carmen su cumpleaños en el parque Caña Hueca. Carmen estuvo contenta y se la pasó muy bien. Sólo al principio que no llegaba nadie estaba agüitadona. Pero en cuanto llegó la primera invitada su carita cambió y estuvo feliz.

Today we celebrated Carmen's birthday in a park. Carmen was happy and had a great time. At the beginning she was a bit sad because we thought no one was coming to her party. But as soon as the first girl showed up, she was smiling again.

Hoy Carmen cumplió 7 años. Teníamos pensado llevarla a comer a un restaurant que le gusta mucho después de recogerla de la escuela. Todo iba muy bien hasta que llegamos al restaurant y se dio cuenta que traía el uniforme. Por nada del mundo quiso entrar, así que regresamos a casa. Y, mientras preparaba un spaguetti, abrió los regalos que le enviaron sus abuelos y sus yayos. Le encantaron. Muchas gracias!

Today Carmen is 7 years old. Her dad suggested taking her to her favorite restaurant after school. She was happy and excited but as soon as she realized (once we were about to get in the restaurant) that she was wearing her uniform, she just wouldn't get in for anything in the world. So we had to go home. And, while I was cooking dinner, she opened her presents from her grandparents. She loved them all! Thanks!

Nos vamos//We're moving

Ayer nos despedimos de varios amigos de Morelia. En la tarde hicimos una comida indú (Diego cocinó) en casa de Rosi (olvidé la cámara). En la noche tuvimos una reunión en la casa para despedirnos de vecinos y compañeros de Diego del instituto de la UNAM.

Yesterday we said good bye to several friends from Morelia. In the afternoon, we made an Indian dinner (Diego was the cook)in Rosi's house (I forgot my camera). At night we had a small gathering in our house to say good bye to our neighbours and Diego's friends from the Institute where he worked.

El viernes teminando de actualizar el blog, Diego me trajo flores por mi cumpleaños y nos fuimos a tomar un café. De ahí pasamos a recoger a las niñas a la escuela y nos fuimos a comer a Pátzcuaro. Tomás, mi cuñado, nos invitó. Pasamos una tarde muy agradable.

Friday morning after I had updated this blog, Diego brought me flowers for my birthday and we went out to drink some coffee. Then we picked up the girls at school and went to Pátzcuaro to have dinner. Tomás, my brother in law, invited us. We had a good time.

Y el domingo seguimos festejando. Fuimos a un restaurant en Erongarícuaro, un pueblo cerca de Pátzcuaro, a celebrar mi cumpleaños y despedirnos. Gloria y Jorge, unos amigos de aquí de Morelia, nos invitaron. Estuvimos con ellos y otros amigos toda la tarde. Las niñas se divirtieron de lo lindo. Jugaron en los juegos, vieron patos y Carmen anduvo descalza y se subió con sus amigos y su papá a una lancha. Estaba feliz! Nos la pasamos muy bien. Gracias, Gloria! Los vamos a extrañar!

And on Sunday we were still celebrating. We went to a restaurant in Erongarícuaro (it's a difficult name, even for Spanish speakers), a town close to Pátzcuaro to celebrate my birthday. Gloria and Jorge, some friends from Morelia, invited us. We were there with them and other friends from 2 pm to 8 pm. The girls had a wonderful time. They played in the playground, saw ducks, Carmen took off her shoes, and went sailing with her friends and her dad. She was really happy! We had a great time! Thanks a lot, Gloria! We'll miss you!

35 años/ 35 years old

Hoy es mi cumpleaños. Carmen me hizo una pulsera de colores muy bonita y una tarjeta. Diego e Isabel me cantaron las mañanitas cuando se levantaron. Y después de dejar a Isa en la escuela, yo me fui a comprar mi regalo (dos blusas y unos pantalones)con un dinerito que me dio mi mamá. Carmen quiere que prepare un pastel de plátano para comerlo en la tarde, pero fuera de eso no tengo planes para celebrar mi cumpleaños.


Today is my birthday. Carmen made me a pretty and colorful wristband and a card. Diego and Isabel sang "Happy Birthday" to me when they woke up. And after I drop Isabel at school, I went to buy my birthday present (two blouses and a pair of jeans) with some money that my mom gave me when she was here a couple of weeks ago. We're not doing anything to celebrate my birthday but Carmen wants me to make a banana cake to eat it in the afternoon.

Hannukah

El domingo fuimos por primera vez a una fiesta de Hannukah. Comimos las tradicionales latkes (un tipo de pancake de papa o hashbrowns con mas ingredientes), pollo, ejotes con aceite y un aderezo muy rico y zanahorias ralladas con limon.

Last Sunday we went for the first time to a Hannukah celebration. We ate the traditional latkes (a kind of pancake or hashbrowns but with more ingredients), chicken, green beans with oil and grated carrots with lime.
Mani (el hijo de los canadienses que nos invitaron) e Isabel jugaron al dreidel (una pirinola)con monedas de chocolate, aunque Isabel se entretuvo jugando su propia version del juego.

Mani (the son of the Canadian friends that invited us) and Isabel played the dreidel with chocolate coins. Isabel played her own version of the game, though.

Luego rompimos la pinhata (que no podia faltar en Mexico), prendimos tres velas (por ser el tercer dia de Hannukah) y bailamos la hora (un baile judio que generalmente se baila en bodas y Bar Mitzvahs). Nos las pasamos muy bien.

We later had a pinhata (we had to have one. We're in Mexico, you know), we lighted three candles because it was the third day of Hannukah and we dance the hora (a jewish dance for weddings and Bar Mitzvahs. We really had a great time.

Posadas

Desde el lunes empezamos con las posadas. La primera fue la del ballet de Carmen, de puras niñas. La segunda fue antier y fue la del Instituto donde trabaja Diego. Fue a la hora de la comida y hubo varias piñatas para los niños, pero ni Carmen ni Isabel quisieron pegarles. Carmen se la pasó corre y corre toda la tarde y la Isa también pero estaba algo enfermilla otra vez así que no pudo correr todo lo que quiso.

Last Monday we went to our first posada of the season. It was the posada of Carmen's ballet, just for girls. The second one was on Thursday, organized by the Institute where Diego is working. It was at 3 PM. There were piñatas but neither Carmen nor Isabel wanted to hit them. Carmen run and run the whole afternoon and so did Isabel, but she was a bit sick (again) so she was not able to run as much as she would have liked.

En la foto, están listas para irnos a la posada de su escuela que fue anoche. Carmen cantó un par de canciones de navidad con los niños de su grupo, pero la Isa no quiso participar con los de su grupo.

In the picture, the girls are ready to go to the posada at their school, which was last night. Carmen sang a couple of Christmas carols with her classmates, and Isabel didn't want to participate.

Y mañana domingo nos invitaron a una celebración de Hannukah, que me imagino que estará un poco mexicanizada porque habrá piñata.

And tomorrow, we are invited to a Hannukkah celebration. But I think it'll be somekind of a Hannukah/posada party because they're having a piñata.
