El verano que llegamos a Halifax intenté resucitar el blog, pero sin mucho éxito; sólo publiqué una entrada. Hoy otra vez, a petición del público (Carmen e Isabel), se reabre este espacio virtual.

In the summer that we arrived in Halifax, I tried to start blogging again. But I only managed to publish an entry. Now, since the audience (Carmen and Isabel) is asking for it, we're re-opening this virtual space.

And we're back!

After several months of living offline we're back to our virtual world. Many things have happened while I haven't been keeping our blog. We have taken pictures of some of those things, but not many. At least not as many as I used to take. And the few pictures that we have taken are in different folders in my computer or in Diego's, or in facebook, and we have also lost some. So, it's time to bring back some order to our lives and therefore I'm bringing this blog back to life. But the main reason for having our blog up and running is to help us keep in touch with family and friends, since not all of them are in facebook.


Después de varios meses desconectados de nuestro mundo virtual, estamos de vuelta. Muchas cosas han pasado. Hemos tomado fotos de algunas de esas cosas, pero no muchas. Desde que dejé de escribir en el blog, dejé de tomar fotos. Y las pocas fotos que hemos tomado están desperdigadas en folders diferentes en mi computadora o en la de Diego, o en facebook, y algunas cuantas se nos han perdido. Por eso, para ordenar un poco nuestros recuerdos, creo que es tiempo de resucitar el blog. Pero la razón principal de abrir nuevamente el blog, es para seguir en contacto con la familia y los amigos, pues no todos están en facebook.

Destino Final

El día 2 de enero salimos rumbo a nuestro destino final en Florida donde estaremos unos meses para que pueda trabajar en mi tesis y terminar con el doctorado de una vez por todas.

La despedida fue muy triste porque Diego no viajaba con nosotras. El tramo de La Paz a Guadalajara lo pasamos en silencio. Las niñas se durmieron un rato y yo leí un poco. Cuando llegamos a Guadalajara, bajamos del avión para encontrarnos con unos amigos que conocimos en Gainesville pero que ahora viven allá. Como teníamos 4 horas para tomar el siguiente vuelo, nos fuimos a su casa a desayunar unas ricas quesadillas y un chocolate caliente. Platicamos un rato y los niños jugaron un poco. Pero el tiempo pasó rápido y tuvimos que regresar al aeropuerto a tomar el siguiente vuelo.

Hablamos con Diego, pasamos a la sala de espera, abordamos el avión y ya todo estaba listo para despegar cuando el piloto anunció que se demoraría la salida unos 15 minutos porque cargarían más combustible debido al mal tiempo que hacía en Atlanta. Pero 15 minutos después, otro anuncio nos daba la mala noticia que el avión ahora NO podía despegar porque estaba muy pesado y la temperatura en Guadalajara seguía subiendo y eso afectaba no sé de qué manera el despegue. Así que la solución que daban era que se quedara todo el equipaje o que se bajaran 12 pasajeros para que el avión pudiera despegar. A las personas que se quedaran les pagarían el hospedaje, PERO no podrían tomar el vuelo al día siguiente sino hasta dos días después. Así que aunque hubo un par de voluntarios que se bajaron del avión, el equipaje de TODOS se quedo en Guadalajara y nos llegaría según los pronósticos del piloto en dos días. Aunque primero dijeron que podía tardar hasta cuatro días, yo creo que con la intención de que más gente se quedara. Pero al parecer la gran mayoría tenía que volver forzozamente a casa ese día. Por lo menos en mi caso sí era así. Tenía que llegar a recoger las llaves del departamento donde íbamos a vivir esta temporada, instalarnos, inscribir a las niñas en sus respectivas escuelas, prepar clases, y ahora con este imprevisto irme de compras porque no teníamos NADA. Las maletas que traía arriba del avión sólo traían los juguetes de las niñas. Así que la tristeza se disipó y en su lugar se instaló la preocupación.

Afortunadamente, llegamos a una ciudad donde vivimos varios años, donde tenemos amigos y donde no ha faltado quien nos eche la mano desde que llegamos -algunos casi a diario. Gracias!

Sleeping over // pijamada

Carmen had her first sleep over last Friday. She had such a great time that she wanted to stay over for another night. But she didn't; instead, her friend stayed over at our house. This was a huge milestone for Carmen.

El viernes pasado, Carmen se fue a dormir a casa de una amiga. Esta es la primera vez que lo hace. La verdad yo no creí que se fuera a quedar, pero me equivoqué. Se la pasó tan bien que quería quedarse una noche más. Pero al final su amiga fue quien vino a dormir a la casa.

Mi viaje al DF / my trip to Mexico City

Hoy, por primera vez en 9 años, viajé sola. La última vez que lo hice fue precisamente para sacar mi visa de estudiante, pero aún no tenía hijas.

Hoy por primera vez en 7 años y medio (7 años y ocho meses para ser exactos), es la primera vez que dormiré fuera de casa sin ninguna de mis hijas.

Es una sensación bastante extraña. Mi cuerpo se siente extraño. Mis brazos y mis manos estàn algo torpes. De repente no saben qué hacer, cómo o dònde acomodarse.

Por primera vez en años, viajo ligera de equipaje. Con la mochila al hombro. Esta es también una extraña sensación de libertad.

Quiero caminar por la ciudad. Recorrerla. Admirarla. Disfrutarla. Ir a sitios que hace años no visito...

Medio día es muy poco para esta gran ciudad. Veré qué tanto puedo hacer después de hacer los trámites de mi visa.


Today, for the first time in 9 years, I´ve traveled all by myself. The last time I traveled all alone was also to get my student visa. I was childless then.

Today, for the first time in 7 years and a half (7 years and 8 months to be exact), is the first time that I´m away from home without my daughters.

I feel weird. My hands and my arms don´t know what to do. My whole body feels strange.

Freedom is also a weird sensation. This is the first time -in years- that I travel with just my backpack. I want to walk and walk as I used to when I lived here, and admire this great city. Go to places I haven´t been to in ages...

But I just have half a day to enjoy this wonderful city -I´ll be in the American Embassy all morning.

But, I´ll see what I can do.

summer time

Hoy inició el horario de verano aquí en México. Pero en Tuxtla, parece que también comenzó el verano por las altas temperaturas que hemos tenido. Ha llegado hasta los 40º C. Al parecer es una onda cálida, pero la gente dice que abril y mayo son los meses más calurosos del año por estos rumbos.

Today began our summer time (Brit. English for daylight saving time.) Not only did we have turned forward our clocks one hour, but we have also been having high temperatures around the 104º F. It seems that there´s a heat wave, but locals say that April and May are the hottest months of the year down here.

Carmen's New Look

This is the first time that Carmen gets such a short haircut. She loves it and doesn't care if people think she looks like a boy. We don't think she does, but she seems to think so. She's really happy with her new look, though.

Esta es la primera vez que Carmen se corta el pelo tan corto. Le encanta y no le importa que la gente vaya a pensar que parece niño. A nosotros no nos parece, pero a ella un poco. Pero aún así, está feliz con su nuevo look.

La primera visita del ratoncito// the tooth fairy visited our home for the first time

Anoche se le cayó a Carmen su primer diente de leche. Bueno, en realidad el papá ayudó un poco a que se le terminara por caer.

Last night, Carmen lost her first baby tooth. Well, her dad helped a little.


Hace una semana, después de comer un elote, sintió que uno de sus dientes de abajo estaba flojo. De hecho, ella asegura que el elote fue el culpable. Pero bueno, el caso es que desde ese día ha estado super emocionada esperando a que por fin se la cayera su primer diente. En todos estos días no ha dejado de hablar de su diente y del ratoncito que nos visitaría para llevarse su diente y dejarle una moneda.

A week ago, after eating a corn in the cob, Carmen felt that one of her bottom teeth was loose. In fact, she blames the corn for her loose tooth. Anyway, the thing is that from that day on, she's been super excited waiting for her first tooth to fall out. All these days, she has been talking about her tooth and the tooth fairy (well, in Mexico is not really the tooth fairy who comes, but a tiny mouse) to come for her tooth and bring her a coin.

Y, ayer que se le cayó, fue el colmo de la felicidad. Hasta Isabel brincaba en la cama del gusto de que a su hermana se le hubiera caido un diente.

And yesterday that the tooth finally fell out, she was thrilled. I really cannot describe her happiness. And it was contagious, even Isabel was jumping on her bed because she was also so very happy for her big sister.

Y hoy en la mañana, encontró bajo su almohada, la moneda de diez pesos que le trajo el ratón de los dientes.

And in the morning, Carmen found under her pillow a ten-pesos coin (a dollar +/-), that the tooth mouse gave her for her tooth.

Ya estamos en Chiapas. Tenemos pocos días, pero casi todos los días hemos salido a conocer algún lugar de la ciudad. Hemos visitado el ZOOMAT, un zoológico precioso, que más bien es como una reserva ecológica; el parque "Convivencia Infantil" (que tiene además de columpios, subibajas y resbaladillas, juegos de feria); el parque "Caña Hueca", un parque recreativo y deportivo (ahí nos rentamos un cuadriciclo y Diego y yo pedaleamos y las niñas iban enfrente); y al Joyyo Mayu, otro parque recreativo pero más de descanso. Estos cuatro parques (incluyendo al zoológico), son bastante grandes y la vegetación es impresionante. También hemos ido varias veces al parque de la marimba, que es más bien una plaza con un kiosco en el centro donde todas las tardes tocan la marimba y mucha gente baila. Ahí nos sentamos a tomar café y comer raspados.

We are now in Chiapas. We just got here, but we've been going out almost every day to different places in the city. We've been to the zoo, which is located in an ecologic reserve area and only exhibits fauna from Chiapas. It's one of the best zoos I've ever been to. We've also been to the park "Convivencia Infantil" (which has playgrounds and rides); to the park "Caña Hueca" (that has playgrounds, picnic areas and several basketball and volleyball courts, and soccer fields. In this park, one can rent bikes for 3-4 people, we already did); and to the park Joyyo Mayu, which is a park to take strolls and relax. These four parks (including the zoo) are large parks and the fauna is amazing (well keep in mind that I'm from the desert.)

We have also gone to the park "La Marimba," which is a plaza with a kiosk where every afternoon they played the marimba and people go there to dance, to listen to the melodies or to watch people dancing. We usually go to a cafe to drink some coffee and have some snow cones.

La ciudad ha superado con mucho nuestras expectativas y la verdad es que estamos muy agusto. La gente es muy linda. El clima ha estado muy agradable. Yo esperaba un calor pegajoso pero no, ha estado bastante fresco y no hemos sentido calor como el que ya empezaba a sentirse en La Paz.

The city has exceeded our expectations and the truth is that we really like it here. The people are nice. The weather is great. I thought it was going to be very humid and hot but it isn't. It's cool in the mornings and in the evenings and just warm in the afternoon.

Homesick

Diego left yesterday. His final destination is Chiapas, but first he went to Morelia to get his car and take care of some paperwork there.

The girls don't know that he was in Morelia, or maybe they did, they may have overheard something, or maybe is that their dad is gone and that they already miss their home or I don't know what, but the thing is that Isabel started crying that she wanted to go to "Moyeyia." She was really tired and maybe also feeling icky (yesterday was a really hot day). Carmen was ok, but she has also told me several times that she misses her house, her school, her friends and that even though she likes it here, she doesn't feel at home. Hopefully, we'll have a home soon.

On the funny side, Isabel went to the university with her grandma Aurora and while they were waiting for me to finish a class (I'm teaching a Summer course for students from San Diego State University), they saw and greeted many people and someone asked Isabel if she loved her grandma. Isabel replied that she did love her grandma Rosi.

Diego se fue ayer. Su destino final es Tuxtla, pero primero fue a Morelia a recoger su carro y a hacer unos trámites y papeleo.

Las niñas no saben que su papá andaba en Morelia, o quizá si lo oyeron o además de extrañar su casa ahora extrañan también a su papá, no sé, pero el caso es que Isabel se soltó llorando en la noche diciendo que quería irse a "Moyeyia" y nada podía convencerla de lo contrario. Estaba cansada y acalorada (fue un día extremadamente caluroso).

Carmen estuvo bien, pero en cuanto oyó a su hermanita, volvió a decirme lo que ya me ha dicho varias veces: que extraña su casa, su escuela, sus amigos, que no se siente en casa (aunque le encanta La Paz). Esperemos que ya pronto tengan nuevamente su espacio.

La nota graciosa del día es que Isabel se fue con Aurora, su yaya, a la universidad y mientras esperaban a que yo saliera de dar una clase (estoy dando un curso de español a unos estudiantes de la universidad de San Diego que vinieron en un programa de verano), estuvieron saludando a varias personas. Una de ellas le preguntó que si quería a su abuelita e Isabel respondió que si, que quería a su abuelita Rosi.

update

El miércoles en la noche, un día después de la fiesta de despedida y a dos de que llegara el camión de la mudanza, a Isabel le dió calentura. Tuvo fiebre de 40 grados por dos días y aunque no presentaba ningún otro síntoma decidimos posponer la mudanza para el siguiente lunes. Pero el fin de semana, aunque ya estaba mejor, decidimos aplazar la ida a Chiapas e irnos a La Paz con la familia para que Isabel se recuperara y Carmen terminara la escuela allá. Tenemos dos semanas por acá y por acá seguiremos un par de meses más(quizá Diego tenga que irse en unos días), hasta que Carmen termine la escuela.

Wednesday night, 24hr after our farewell party and two days before our moving date, Isabel was running a fever (40 degrees Celsius), so we decided to call the moving company and tell them to come on Monday. Isabel kept running a fever for 2 days, so even though she was better Saturday morning we decided to come to La Paz with our family and stay here for a couple of months. So, we'll be here (maybe Diego will have to go to Chiapas in a couple of days) until school is over.

Lo único triste de este abrupto cambio de planes fue que tuvimos que regalar al Yago. Pero quedó en muy buenas manos. Se lo dimos a Deni, una amiga de mi suegra -y nuestra también- de hace años, que vive en Morelia. Ella se lo iba a dar a una de sus hijas. Con ella tendrá un gran patio para correr y una compañera (una perra) para jugar. Así que sabemos que está feliz y podremos seguir al tanto de lo que le pase.

The sad part of this sudden change of plans is that we had to give Yago in adoption. But his in good hands. We left him with an old friend of ours, who has been living in Morelia for a while. Her daughter is going to take care of him and we know he's happy there. He has a big yard to run and a playmate (a female dog). We're glad we're going to be able to know how he is doing.

Carmen tiene aretes! // Carmen got her ears pierced!

El lunes después del ballet llevé a Carmen a que le pusieran aretes. Ya tenía más de dos años pidiendo que la llevaramos a algún lado para que le hicieran los "hoyitos" y por una cosa o por otra (a la mera hora le sacaba), no la llevabamos. Pero esta vez ya tenía una semana entera pidiendonoslo, así que por fin trae aretes. Está feliz y no le dolió nada. Bueno, dice que sólo un poquito.

Last Monday, after ballet, I took Carmen to get her ears pierced. She had been asking to get them pierced for over a year, but for one thing (the main reason was that she was afraid it would hurt) or another we hadn't taken her. But this time, she had been asking for a week so I took her to a jewlery store and now she's finally wearing earrings. She's sooo happy and she says it didn't hurt her at all. Well, just a little.

Nos vamos//We're moving

Ayer nos despedimos de varios amigos de Morelia. En la tarde hicimos una comida indú (Diego cocinó) en casa de Rosi (olvidé la cámara). En la noche tuvimos una reunión en la casa para despedirnos de vecinos y compañeros de Diego del instituto de la UNAM.

Yesterday we said good bye to several friends from Morelia. In the afternoon, we made an Indian dinner (Diego was the cook)in Rosi's house (I forgot my camera). At night we had a small gathering in our house to say good bye to our neighbours and Diego's friends from the Institute where he worked.

Hace un par de semanas, Carmen agarro las tijeras para cortarse un mechoncito de pelo. He aqui el resultado.

Two weeks ago, Carmen took the scissors to cut herself a lock of hair. Here's the result.

Finally

Sin quererlo, la semana se convirtio en un mes. No por gusto, desidia o falta de tiempo, sino por que aun no tenemos telefono y por consiguiente no podemos conectarnos a internet. Por eso, la actualizacion de este blog sera todavia esporadica. Ahorita las ninias y yo estamos en La Paz, tomando unas vacaciones no planeadas. Pero esa es otra historia.

Nuestra casa en Morelia ya esta casi lista. Todavia quedan cajas que desempacar y cuadros que colgar. Pero ya esta habitable. Carmen esta feliz, no tuvo ningun shock cultural (aunque si extrania a sus amigos). Le encanta su nueva casa, sobre todo el poder ir caminando a la tiendita de la esquina para comprar una paleta helada o algun dulce.

Tambien esta muy contenta con su nueva escuela. Estuvo llendo al curso de verano y aunque al principio no queria, al tercer dia ya estaba como pez en el agua. Ni se despedia en las manianas, se bajaba corriendo a saludar a sus nuevas amigas. Isabel por otro lado, ha sufrido un poco con esto de la escuela. No le gusta nada. Y eso es lo unico que no termina de gustarme de nuestra nueva vida en Mexico. Pero fuera de eso, estamos todos muy bien. Nos gusta mucho Morelia y sus alrededores. En cuanto tenga oportunidad pondre algunas fotos.

I planned to be gone for a week but it turned out to be a whole month. Not because I forgot or because I didn't have to to write but because we still don't have an internet connection at home (we don't have phone either). So, I still won't be updating this blog regularly. Right now, the girls and I are in La Paz, on last minute vacations, but that's another story.

We stll haven't finished unpacking but we're almost done. There are just a few boxes left waiting to be open and some paintings that need to be hang.

Carmen is really happy in Morelia (she misses her friends, though). She loves her new house, especially walking to a little store that is really close to our house, to buy some candies. She also likes her new school. She went tho the summer camp for 2 weeks and she absolutely loved it. Isabel also likes Morelia, but she just doesn't like going to school. She gets really scared and cries a lot. That's the only thing that I don't like about our new life here in Mexico. But other than that, we are really happy here. We like Morelia a lot. As soon as I can I'll post some pictures.

Relaxing

Despues del estres del viaje hasta la frontera, Diego y Jehudiel pasaron el dia descansando: se levantaron tarde, vieron el partido de futbol Francia vs. Brasil y se fueron al cine a ver Superman. Maniana me imagino que tendran un dia muy similar pues dudo que haya mucho que hacer alla donde estan. Pero esta bien porque la verdad es que si se merecian un descanso.

After all the stress that Diego and Jehudiel had in their trip to the border, they spent the day resting: they got up late, watched the soccer match France vs. Brazil and they went to the movies to see Superman. Tomorrow, I think, they'll have a similar day. I don't think there's much to do down there where they are at. But that's ok because they deserved a break.

proximas paradas/our next stops

Maniana temprano dejamos Tanglewood, la villa donde vivimos por 6 anios. Vamos a pasar el dia despidiendonos de varios amigos y dormiremos en casa de Belkis y Jeremy, unos amigos venezolanos. El lunes volamos a Mexico y llegaremos con Tomas y Marina, mis cuniados, pero posiblemente tambien andemos dando un tour por otras casas ya que estaremos 3 noches en el DF. Hasta el jueves estaremos llegando a Morelia, por lo que es muy probable que durante casi una semana no actualice este blog.

Tomorrow morning we'll leave Tanglewood, the village where we lived for 6 years. We'll spend the day saying goodbye to several friends and we'll spend the night at Belkis and Jeremy's house, some friends from Venezuela. On Monday we'll fly to Mexico and we'll stay with Tomas and Marina, my brother in-law and his wife, but we may end up staying at other friends' houses since we'll be in Mexico City for 3 nights. We'll go to Morelia on Thursday, so it's very likely that I'll won't post in this blog for almost a week.

homeless

Hoy entregamos las llaves del depto. Ahora si ya no tenemos casa, asi que estos dias andaremos como gitanos. Ahorita, estamos en casa de unos amigos colombianos pero quiza el domingo nos pasemos con unos amigos venezolanos. El lunes llegamos a Mexico y por algunos contratiempos que Diego ha tenido en el camino, yo y las ninhas nos quedaremos 2 o 3 dias en el DF, donde tambien andaremos vistando a los amigos.

Today we checked out of our apartment. We don't have a home anymore. Right now, we're with some Colombian friends but we may spend Sunday night at another friend's apartment. On Monday we fly to Mexico City and we'll have to be there for 2 or 3 days (Diego had some problems at the border) so me and the girls will be visiting our friends.

La mudanza/ Moving out

Han sido unos dias algo ajetreadros con esto de la mudanza. Lo bueno es que estuvieron mis papas para ayudarnos, pero ayer se fueron.

These last days have been pretty hectic with all this moving stuff. The good thing is that my parents were here to help us, but they left yesterday.

Diego y Jehudiel (un gran amigo) estan ahora en la frontera con todas nuestras cosas. Han tenido varios contratiempos pero manhana, como estaba planeado, pasaran las cosas a un camion de mudanzas mexicano y el y Jehudiel seguiran en nuestra camioneta el viaje hasta Morelia.

Diego and Jehudiel (a good friend) are now in the border with all our stuff. They've had several problems on the road but tomorrow, as it was planned, they'll be changing our things to a Mexican moving truck. He and Jehudiel will then continue their trip to Morelia in our car.

Las ninhas y yo estamos todavia estamos en Gainesville, pero ya no estamos en nuestro depa. Todavia no lo he entregado pero como ya no tenemos muebles, nos hemos mudado temporalmente al depa de Alexander y Carmen, unos amigos colombianos que andan de viaje. Ha sido una SUPER ayuda, hasta su carro nos prestaron.

We (me and the girls) are still in Gainesville, but we are no longer in our apartment. I haven't checked out but since we don't have furniture there anymore, we have moved temporarily to Alexander's and Carmen's apartment, some Colombian friends, who are traveling right now. They also lend us their car. It has been a great help!
