Last weekend in Gainesville// Último fin de semana en Gainesville

The last Saturday of April, which was our last weekend in Gainesville, we went to a festival at Morningside Nature Center. We went with Lily´s family, friends we made years ago when Carmen was in preschool. We saw traditional crafts and trades such as sheep shearing; spinning; weaving; making ropes, cloth dolls, and other toys. We also rode a wagon and listen to music from the 1870´s.

El último sábado de abril, que fue nuestro último fin de semana en Gainesville, fuimos a un festival en Morningside Nature Center. Fuimos con la familia de Lily, amigos que tenemos desde que Carmen tenía 4 años. Ahí nos tocó ver cómo les quitaban la lana a los borregos, cómo hacían cuerdas, muñecas de trapo y otros juguetes. También nos tocó subirnos a una carreta jalada por caballos y escuchar música de finales del siglo XIX.

Since the day we made Carmen´s castle, Isabel has been asking me to make a castle for her. Last week, when she asked me again, I asked her if she would rather have a dollhouse. She said yes and I went to get all the boxes that we had. I usually don´t save boxes. As soon as they are empty, I throw them away, but since we are here temporarily and we have room, I decided to keep some in case we need them when we move out.

We all had a nice time making the dollhouse and Carmen suggested that we should keep saving boxes once we move back to Mexico to make more toys and projects. I think so, too.

Desde el día que hicimos el castillo para el proyecto de Carmen, Isabel me ha estado pidiendo que le haga uno a ella. La semana pasada me lo volvió a pedir y le pregunté que si no prefería una casita de muñecas. Dijo que sí y fui por las cajas que tenía guardadas. Normalmente, no guardo cajas; tan pronto como las vacío, las tiro. Pero como estamos aquí temporalmente y tengo espacio suficiente, he guardado algunas cajas por si las necesito cuando nos vayamos.

Nos entretuvimos tanto haciendo la casita que Carmen sugirió que cuando regresemos a México debemos guardar más cajas para seguir haciendo más proyectos como estos. Creo que tiene razón.

Getting ready for Easter//alistándonos para Pascua

Wednesday was a rainy day. In the afternoon we couldn´t go outside to play as we usually do. The girls had watched some TV, had played, had read, had drawn and were getting bored, so I told them that we could paint the eggshells, that I had been saving for Easter, that day instead of waiting until the weekend to do it. They loved the idea, they were really looking forward to it. So, I went to get the eggshells and Isabel went to get her bunny ears that she has been wearing for over a month now.


El miércoles estuvo lloviendo todo el día, por lo que en la tarde no pudimos salir a jugar. Las niñas ya estaban hartas de estar encerradas y todavía era bastante temprano, así que les dije que podía pintar los cascarones de huevo que había estado guardando desde hace como un mes para usarlos el domingo de Pascua e Isabel fue por sus orejas de conejo que estaban ad hoc para la ocasión.


And today, even though it was a lovely day and we had spent some time outside, there were no children to play with; so we came home ealier than expected. I told the girls we could make their Easter baskets. I did a google search and found two sites with tutorials on paper baskets: Woven paper basket and How to make a paper Easter basket. Both girls liked the last one. I went to get empty cereal boxes, glue and paints and Isabel got her bunny ears again (however, this time she took them off before I took the picture).


Y hoy, a pesar de que fue un día precioso y de haber estado afuera un buen rato, como no había más niños con quienes jugar, regresamos al depa más temprano. Así que les dije a las niñas que podíamos hacer ahora sus canastas de Pascua. Hice una búsqueda en Google para ver si encontraba como hacer canastas de papel y encontré dos sitios con instrucciones: Canasta tejida de papel and Cómo hacer una canasta de Pascua de papel. A las dos les gustó más la última. Fui por las cajas de cereal, el resistol y las pinturas e Isabel fue otra vez por sus orejas de conejo (aunque esta vez se las quitó antes de que tomara las fotos).

Spring Literacy Fair

Today, Isabel and I went to her school to a spring literay fair. The theme of the fair was "The farmer in the dell", so all the activities that they planned were farm related and they had hay in the playground. Some of the games they had were beanbag toss, pin the tail, gone fishin´, 3 craft stations, petting zoo, story and music time. And they gave each child a bag with a book, some stickers and reading tips for parents.

Isabel got to play in a playground she never gets to play in, and play with a friend who is in a lower class so they never get to play together. We had lunch there, too. We had fun. We missed Carmen, though. She was in a friend´s house, where she had spent the night.

Hoy, Isabel y yo fuimos a su escuela a una kermesse que organizaron. El tema era sobre una canción tradicional infantil "The farmer in the dell" por lo que todas las actividades que planearon estaban relacionadas con el tema de la granja y pusieron paja en el área de juegos. Había muchas actividades para los niños: manualidades, varios juegos de fiesta como ponerle la cola al burro, animales de granja para que los vieran y acariciaran, les contaron un cuento, hicieron una ronda y les regalaron una bolsa de mezclilla con un libro, calcomanias y un folleto con tips para los papás para leerles a los niños.

Isabel pudo jugar en un área de juegos en la que nunca había estado y estar con una amiguita que es un año más chica que ella y con la que tampoco nunca puede jugar. Pasamos un rato muy agradable, aunque extrañamos a Carmen, pues se fue la noche anterior a dormir a casa de una amiga.

Castle Building Project Update

Yesterday we started a Castle building project that Carmen has to do for her school. They´ve been studying the Middle Ages and they will be having a Medieval feast the first week of April, where I suppose they will show the projects.
She had the option of creating a poster or building a castle. Whatever option she chose, she needed to do some research and label the castle parts. She wanted to build a castle, but we had to start doing our research first.

I was planning to go to the public library, but since we missed the bus and we had to wait an hour to catch the next one, I decided to start our search on-line. There I found a really great website with a webquest: Castles in Medieval Times. Just by following the links there, we got to see three different castles with their descriptions, learned some of the terminology, learned the answer to some of the questions Carmen had to do some researh on, and then we were ready to start making the castle.
There is a link to a model on the website that I found, but Carmen wanted to do it with the paper roll tubes and some empty boxes that I was saving for Isabel´s daycare. Carmen remember seeing a similar project in an art attack program, so we followed the tutorial to make a medieval castle.
So far, this is how the castle looks.

Ayer empezamos un proyecto que Carmen tiene para su escuela. Han estado estudiando la Edad Media y la primera semana de abril van a tener un festival medieval, donde me imagino mostrarán los proyectos.
Carmen tenía la opción de hacer un poster o construir un castillo. Cualquiera que fuera la opción que escogiera tenía que investigar un poco sobre los castillos y sus partes. Ella quiso hacer un castillo, así que antes de empezar a construirlo, nos pusimos a investigar.

Tenía pensado ir a la biblioteca, pero como se nos fue el autobús y teníamos que esperar una hora para tomar el otro, decidí buscar en Internet. Y encontré un sitio muy bueno que tenía un webquest de castillos medievales. Ahí aprendimos la terminología, leimos descripciones de castillos, vimos fotos... Después de un rato, estábamos listas para empezar a construir el castillo.

En ese mismo sitio, había un link a un modelo de un castillo, pero Carmen quiso hacerlo con unas cajas y rollos de papel de baño que estaba guardando para la escuela de Isabel. Carmen se acordó de haber visto en art attack un proyecto similar y seguimos esa misma técnica para hacer un castillo medieval. Así luce el castillo hasta el momento.

A neat discovery

I found a nice blog today with craft ideas for kids. It links to several blogs that show neat crafts for children of different ages. And the best part of today´s discovery is that there´s a book certificate giveaway. Will I be the lucky winner?

Hoy encontré un blog con muchas manualidades para niños. Tiene links a diferentes blogs con una gran variedad de actividades. Y lo mejor de mi descubrimiento es que hoy era el último día para participar en la rifa de un certificado para libros. Me lo sacaré?

En casa de Lily // At Lily's

Pasamos la tarde con Lily, su hermanito y su mamá.
We spent the afternoon with Lily, her baby brother and her mom.

Las niñas se divirtieron muchísimo. Hicieron las cosas que más les gustan: disfrazarse, dibujar y bailar.

The girls had a lot of fun. They did the three things they love the most: dressing up, drawing and dancing.

Creative Butterfly Assignment

Carmen has to make a butterfly for her English class. But she has to follow some rules:

*They cannot simply draw and color a butterfly
*They have to use different materials,
*It cannot be bigger than a letter-sized paper,
*Both wings must have the same color pattern
*The butterfly must have the correct number of legs
*The shape and the body parts must be accurate (I think they mean symmetrical)

Over the weekend we worked on it and made one for Isabel, too.

It´s a papier-mache butterfly because we had all the materials that we needed to make it: paper, flour, water, a stapler, pipes cleaners, paintbrushes, paints and sparkles.

It´s almost done. It only needs some kind of varnish and something to hang it or stick it to a door (they are going to use it to decorate their classroom door.)

Carmen tiene que hacer una mariposa para un proyecto de creatividad de su clase de inglés. Pero tiene que seguir algunas reglas:
*No puede dibujar y colorear una simple mariposa
*No debe ser más grande que una hoja tamaño carta
*Debe tener las alas de igual tamaño y color
*Debe tener la cantidad correcta de patas

Durante el fin de semana nos pusimos a trabajar en el proyecto y también hicimos una para Isabel.
Está hecha de papel maché porque teníamos todo el material necesario: periódico, papel, harina, agua, engrapadora, pipe cleaners, pinceles, pinturas y brillantina.

Ya casi está terminada. Le hace falta una capa de barniz y algo para que se pueda colgar o pegar a una puerta, pues con todas las mariposas que lleven van a decorar la puerta del salón.

Dinosaurios/Dinosaurs

La semana pasada llevaron a Isabel al museo a ver una exposicion de dinosaurios. Ella ya la habia visto hace dos meses con su hermana y su papa y le dio mucho miedo porque estos dinosaurios se mueven y hacen ruido.
Por eso, cuando estuvieron sus yayos (abuelos paternos) ahora en diciembre, no quiso que fueramos otra vez. Pero como estuvieron hablando de dinosaurios y haciendo varios proyectos en su escuela una semana antes del paseo (y en casa tambien), acepto ir de nuevo. Pero cuando vio a los dinosaurios otra vez, se volvio a asustar.

Last week, Isabel went on a field trip to see a dinosaur exhibition. She had already seen it two months ago with her dad and her sister and she got really scared because these dinosaurs move and make noises. We wanted to go there in December with her grandparents, but she just didn't want to go there. But at her school (and also at home) , they talked about dinosaurs and made some nice little projects for a week before the trip, so at the end she accepted to go. But when she saw the dinosaurs, she got scared again.

Por fin nos pusimos a hacer experimentos con un regalo que les dieron los yayos a las niñas en Navidad. Se entretuvieron un rato disolviendo pastillas de colores, agitando los tubos de ensayo, mezclando los colores y pintando cristales.


We finally made some experiments with a gift the girls got from their "yayos" (Diego's parents)on Christmas. They had fun playing with water, seeing how it changed colors, and painting some cristal rocks.

Ayer empezamos a hacer unas máscaras. Las niñas estaban entusiasmadas jugando con el engrudo, haciendo tiras el periódico, y pegádolas en los moldes de papel aluminio. Pero hoy que ya vieron secas las máscaras no querían pintarlas. Les daban miedo, sobre todo a Isabel. Pero después de un rato se animaron a pintarlas.



Yesterday we started making a couple of masks. The girls were excited playing with the "glue" (water and flour), making strips of paper, putting glue on them and then putting them on the aluminium masks. But today when they saw the masks, all dry and I told them they could paint them, they didn't want to. They were scared, especially Isabel. But later in the afternoon they decided to give it a try.
