• El martes perdi mi bolsa.

• Me acabo de dar cuenta que uno de mis zapatos favoritos tiene un hoyo.

• Se me cayo una amalgama de una muela hace una semana (o dos?).

• Mi carro se esta desbaratando. Bueno, no exactamente pero casi. El sabado, el radiador estaba quemandose. Dos dias despues la bateria estaba muerta.

Definitivamente, necesito una limpia. Aunque en una semana empieza el año de la rata y se supone que sera un buen año. Espero!

• My car is falling apart. Well, not really. But last Saturday, there was smoke coming out from the radiator. We had to buy a new one. Two days later, the battery died. We also had to get a new one.

Tambien me gustan las peliculas donde sale Emma Thompson y en las que actua Gerard Depardieu. La ultima pelicula que vimos de el y Jean Reno fue "Tais Toi!" (2003) Buenisima!

I like Wim Wenders movies and Kenneth Branagh films.

I also like to watch movies in which Emma Thompson or Gerard Depardieu have played a role. The last movie we saw with this actor and Jean Reno was a French comedy called "Tais Toi!"

Steffi me invitó a participar en un juego que consiste en mencionar 8 cosas favoritas (trabajo, películas, ciudades donde haya vivido, series de TV, comida, websites, lugares y colores) e invitar a otros a participar. Pero para no hacer tan larga esta entrada, escribiré una o dos cosas por día. Y al final, escogeré a mis víctimas.

Steffi tagged me and I have to mention 8 favorite things (jobs, movies, cities where I've lived, TV programs, food, websites, places and colors) and tag others, so they can play. But, I don't want this to be a long post, so I'll be posting one or two things per day. At the end, I'll tag my victims.

1. Trabajos
Me encantó darles clases de inglés a niños de 3ro. de primaria en una escuela en el DF. Trabajé muy agusto con ellos.

Pero, prefiero dar clases de español y de linguística a nivel universitario. Por eso, estoy muy emocionada con las clases que estoy dando este semestre en la UNACH.

Sin embargo, mis trabajos favoritos han sido: 1) trabajar con mi asesor en la quinta edición del diccionario de español de la Universidad de Chicago; 2) trabajar como colaboradora en la traducción de Macbeth con la Dra. Enriqueta Gonzalez Padilla. Me encantaría tener nuevamente la oportunidad de trabajar en este tipo de proyectos.


1. Jobs
I loved teaching English to 8 year-old kids in an elementary school in Mexico City. I really enjoyed working with them.

But, I prefer teaching Spanish and Linguistics at the university level. So, I'm thrilled with the classes I'm teaching this semester at UNACH.

However, my favorite jobs ever have been: 1) working as an editorial assistant in the fifth edition of the University of Chicago Spanish Dictionary; and 2) working with Dr. Enriqueta Gonzalez Padilla, on the translation of Macbeth. I would love to have the opportunity to work in this kind of projects again.

Lamentablemente, parece que es en serio. Yo no sabia, pero segun un articulo de la jornada de hace casi dos anhos, si hay islas privadas en Mexico. La Isla Cerralvo, la isla mas cara que esta a la venta es, al parecer propiedad de una familia muy conocida de La Paz.

Well, apparently this is for real. Cerralvo island, according to this site is owned by a well-known family from La Paz. I didn't know there was such a thing as private islands in Mexico.

Dinosaurios/Dinosaurs

La semana pasada llevaron a Isabel al museo a ver una exposicion de dinosaurios. Ella ya la habia visto hace dos meses con su hermana y su papa y le dio mucho miedo porque estos dinosaurios se mueven y hacen ruido.
Por eso, cuando estuvieron sus yayos (abuelos paternos) ahora en diciembre, no quiso que fueramos otra vez. Pero como estuvieron hablando de dinosaurios y haciendo varios proyectos en su escuela una semana antes del paseo (y en casa tambien), acepto ir de nuevo. Pero cuando vio a los dinosaurios otra vez, se volvio a asustar.

Last week, Isabel went on a field trip to see a dinosaur exhibition. She had already seen it two months ago with her dad and her sister and she got really scared because these dinosaurs move and make noises. We wanted to go there in December with her grandparents, but she just didn't want to go there. But at her school (and also at home) , they talked about dinosaurs and made some nice little projects for a week before the trip, so at the end she accepted to go. But when she saw the dinosaurs, she got scared again.

We got mail!

Hoy nos llego correo, algo verdaderamente poco frecuente. A Carmen le llego una carta de su mejor amiga, Cassidy. Y a mi me llego una tarjeta de navidad de una cyber amiga de Kellymom. Pero Isabel inmediatamente se apropio de la tarjeta y la carta que venia en la tarjeta y dijo que "los correios" eran para ella. Brincaba y cantaba una cancion que se invento y besaba la carta de la emocion por haber recibido dos correios de regalo de navidad y reyes. Estaba verdaderamente emocionada.

We got mail today. This is something that happens once in a blue moon. Carmen got a card and a letter from her best friend Cassidy. And I got a Christmas card and a letter from a cyber-friend from Kellymom. But, Isabel said that "the mails" were for her and didn't want to give them to me. She was singing a song that she made up, kissing the card and the letter, and jumping for joy because she had got some mail for Christmas. She was really excited.

A magical moment

Ayer en la tarde, me senté a leer con Carmen un libro en inglés, que es parte de una colección para pequeños lectores. Se los regaló Belkis, una amiga venezolana, cuando ya nos veníamos para México hace año y medio.

En varias ocasiones, intenté leerlos con Carmen, pero la verdad no le interesaban. Ayer intenté de nuevo y esta vez fue diferente. Al principio, Carmen no quería leerlo. Pero una vez que empezó, ya no quiso parar hasta terminarlo todo. Se moría de la risa. De más está decir que disfruté viendo cómo disfrutaba ella el libro.

Yesterday, I sat down with Carmen to read an I Can Read book. Belkis, a friend of ours from Venezuela, bought the Frog and Toad series for Carmen as a farewell gift a year and a half ago, when we were coming back to Mexico.

In several ocassions, I tried to read them to her, but she just wasn't interested. But yesterday, it was different. At the beginning, she didn't want to read it, but once she started, she didn't want to stop. She found the stories so funny that she kept reading until she finished the whole book. She was all laughs and smiles. She enjoyed the book and I enjoyed watching her.

Poetry Speaks

Last Saturday, I went to a breakfast and a meeting at one of my new jobs. When I got there, I was pleasantly surprised to see at the cafeteria, a huge display of books that the library had just bought. And my surprise just got better when I found a lexicography book, that I need for my dissertation; The Lord of the Rings with illustrations -for Carmen; and a poetry anthology, which includes 3 audio CDs with the poems read by their authors. I didn't get the CDs that day, though. I got them three days later.

I haven't been able to listen to them yet. Well, I listened to a couple of the poems already -my curiosity couldn't wait longer- but I'll listen to those CDs right now. The girls are sleeping and I'm waiting for Diego to come home.


El sábado pasado, fui a un desayuno y una junta en una de las universidades donde acabo de empezar a trabajar. Cuando llegué, me sorprendió ver en la cafetería, una exhibición de libros que la biblioteca acaba de adquirir este año. Y mi sorpresa fue mayor cuando encontré un libro de lexicografía, que ocupo para mi tesis; el libro de El Señor de los Anillos, con ilustraciones para Carmen; y una antología de poesía, que incluye tres CDs de audio con los poemas leídos por sus autores.

Los CDs no me los entregaron ese mismo día sino tres días después. Pero no he podido sentarme a escucharlos todavía. Bueno, ya escuché un par de ellos -no aguantaba la curiosidad- . Pero ahorita que las niñas ya están dormidas y mientras espero a Diego, me pondré a escucharlos.

Carmen's New Look

This is the first time that Carmen gets such a short haircut. She loves it and doesn't care if people think she looks like a boy. We don't think she does, but she seems to think so. She's really happy with her new look, though.

Esta es la primera vez que Carmen se corta el pelo tan corto. Le encanta y no le importa que la gente vaya a pensar que parece niño. A nosotros no nos parece, pero a ella un poco. Pero aún así, está feliz con su nuevo look.

Ayer estaba emocionada. Brincaba de alegría, porque me dieron el trabajo que quería en la UNACH, la universidad del estado. Pero hoy sólo se me viene a la mente el comentario de Bush a una señora que tiene tres trabajos, y me deprimo. No estoy en Estados Unidos, pero eso no importa. Cómo es posible que alguien en cualquier parte del mundo diga que es fantástico que alguien TENGA que tener tres trabajos para sobrevivir?

Yesterday, I was thrilled. I was jumping for joy, because I got a job that I wanted at the UNACH state university here in Tuxtla. But today, the only thing that comes to my mind is Bush's comment to a woman that said that she worked three jobs and I get depressed. I'm not in the States, but that doesn't matter. How is it possible that anyone in the world says that it's fantastic to have three jobs, so one can survive?

Yo le voy a enviar una postal a mi abuelita. Debí de haber hecho esto hace mucho tiempo y no por un juego, pero bueno más vale tarde que nunca. Ahora haré esto regularmente. Se pondrá feliz de recibir postales de vez en vez en lugar de puros recibos y cuentas.

I'm going to mail a postcard to my grandma. I should've done that a long time ago and not because of a game, but better late than never. I'll start doing this regularly. She'll be happy to get a postcard in the mail and not just bills.

Se acabaron las vacaciones. El viernes se fueron los yayos (los papás de Diego), el domingo se fue Carlos y hoy regresaron las niñas a la escuela.



Vacations are over. Diego's parents left last Friday, Carlos took the plane Sunday morning and the girls went back to school today.




Diego y yo empezamos la próxima a dar clases, pero ya empezamos a trabajar aquí en la casa o en la oficina. Yo voy a estar trabajando en tres lugares distintos y además ahora sí voy a trabajar en mi tesis doctoral.

Diego and I start working, in front of a class, next week. But we already started working at home or in the office. We're packed with work. I'm going to be working three jobs and this year I AM also going to work on my dissertation.

invierno // winter

El miércoles pensé que por fin había llegado el invierno, porque amaneció lloviendo y frío (14 °C). Pero después me enteré que es una onda fría. Así que esta temperatura "invernal" nos durará sólo un par de días más y volveremos a estar a 30°C.

On Wednesday, I thought winter had finally arrived to Tuxtla, because it was cold for us (57 °F). But then I found out it was a cold front. So, this "cold" weather is not going to last long and in a couple of days it'll be again 86 °F.

enfermita // sick

La noche de año nuevo, cenamos rico y nos acostamos temprano. Todos estabamos cansados del viaje a la playa, pues regresamos a Tuxtla el 31 al mediodía.

On New Year's Eve, we had a nice dinner and went to bed early. We were tired from our trip to the beach, because we came back to Tuxtla that day at noon.


Al día siguiente, Carmen amaneció con dolor de estómago. La pobre se sentía tan mal que no quiso comer nada en todo el día -absolutamente NADA. Y se la pasó acostada. Su hermanita estaba preocupada por ella y le puso unas almohadas para que estuviera cómoda. Pero a la media hora ya quería brincarle en la panza.

The following day, Carmen woke up with a stomach ache. My poor girl was feeling so bad, that she didn't want to eat anything at all that day. I mean ANYTHING. And she just stayed in bed. Her sister was worried about her and she brought her some pillows so she could be comfortable. But half and hour later, she wanted to jump on her sister's tummy.

Hoy, ya se siente un poco mejor. Por lo menos, ya le volvió el apetito.

Today, she's feeling a little better. At least, her apetite is back.

Boca del Cielo//Heaven's Mouth

El domingo fuimos a Boca del Cielo, una playa aquí en Chiapas a la que Carlos, el primo de Diego, fue hace 18 años y donde se quedó a vivir por 3 meses.

Last Sunday, we went to Boca del Cielo, a beach here in Chiapas, where Carlos (Diego's cousin)lived for three months 18 years ago.

Boca del Cielo es un pueblito de pescadores y para llegar a la playa hay que atravesar un gran estero. No es un lugar turístico, pero sí hay turistas -aunque la gran mayoría son chiapanecos. Del lado del estero, hay paseos en lancha a los manglares, a los santuarios de tortuga y también paseos en bananas. De ese lado también están los restaurantes de los mismos pescadores. Pero del lado de la playa, como es mar abierto, no hay nada; sólo algunas palapas y el ruido de las olas. Ahí no hay hoteles, ni tampoco en el pueblo; pero uno puede acampar ahí o colgar su hamaca o irse a dormir a algún pueblo cercano.

Boca del Cielo is a small fishing village. To get to the beach on the sand bar, you have to take a boat ride to cross the lagoon. It is not a touristic place, but there are tourists -most of them are locals. On the sand bar, facing the lagoon, there are boat rides to the mangrove trees, to turtle nesting grounds and even banana rides. The restaurants, owned by the town's fishermen, are also on the lagoon-side shore. But on the beach, facing the ocean, there's nothing; just some palapas and the open sea. There aren't any hotels either, but one can camp there, sleep in a hammock or go to a hotel in another town.

Nosotros sólo fuimos a pasar el día -y por supuesto lo pasamos del lado del mar. Pero Carlos se quedó por allá. Isabel se puso un poco triste y varias veces dijo: "lo voy a extrañar mucho al tío Carlitos". Nosotros también lo extrañamos, pero lo volveremos a ver uno o dos días antes de que regrese a México.

We went there just for the day, but Carlos stayed there. Isabel was sad and several times she told us that she was going to miss uncle Carlitos a lot. We also miss him, but we'll see him again for a day or two before he goes back to Mexico City.
