Día de Reyes // Three Wise Men

Nota: Este post debió haber aparecido el 6 de enero; pero por cuestiones de tiempo, este no se actualiza como es debido.

Note: This entry should have been posted on January 6th, but I haven´t been able to update this blog as often as I would like.

Por primera vez las niñas pudieron colgar sus botitas en una chimenea (aunque sea de mentiritas) para que les amanecieran sus regalos. Por lo general lo general los reyes magos sólo les traen dulces y regalitos, pero como esta vez Santa Claus no se vio muy espléndido que digamos, los reyes les trajeron más regalos.

For the first time ever the girls were able to hang their stockings by the fireplace. Usually the three wise men just bring the girls some candy and small presents, but this time -since Santa Claus wasn´t very generous- they brought them more and bigger gifts.

2nd stop: La Paz

En Caña Hueca // at the park

el puente // long holiday weekend

El fin de semana pasado hubo puente (así se le dice en México a los fines de semana largos debido a algún día festivo; en este caso se trató de la Independencia). No se trabajó ni lunes ni martes. Nosotros no celebramos nada, pero sí descansamos y paseamos.

Ulises, Pilar, Pablo y Fernanda vinieron a visitarnos. Salimos con ellos a los lugares de costumbre; pero esta vez también conocimos otros sitios. Nos la pasamos muy bien. Qué bueno que vinieron!

Adelita en la Independencia

El viernes en su escuela, Isabel tuvo una representación de la Independencia de México.
Last Friday at her school, Isabel had a representation of the Mexican war of Independence.
Aunque ella más bien andaba vestida como una soldadera de la revolución.
She was dressed like a woman soldier during the Mexican revolution, though.

Fuegos artificiales // Fireworks

The girls and I went to see the fireworks that were part of the annual Independence Day eve celebration at UF. We walked all the way from our apartment to Flavet Field, which is almost a mile away. It's a good 20 min. walk. But the girls were excited -Isabel hadn't seen fireworks before- and they already got used to walking (since we don't have a car, we walked them every day to school. Isabel and I usually take the bus, but still we get to walk a lot.)

Las niñas y yo fuimos a ver los fuegos artificiales que clausuraron la celebración de Independencia de los EU aquí en UF. Nos fuimos caminando desde el depa hasta Flavet Field que está como a kilómetro y medio. Hicimos como 20 minutos. Pero las niñas estaban entusiasmadas -Isabel nunca había visto fuegos artificiales- y además ya se han acostumbrado a caminar largos trechos (como no tenemos carro, todas las mañanas las llevamos caminando a la escuela. Isabel y yo, casi siempre tomamos un autobús, pero aún así nos toca caminar bastante).

Día del Padre // Father's Day

El día del padre, Ulises y Pilar, unos amigos, nos invitaron a almorzar a un restaurante en Polanco. Nunca había estado por esos rumbos. Había pasado para ir a Satélite, pero nunca había paseado por ahí.


No me sentía en el DF sino en alguna gran ciudad de Estados Unidos. Estuvimos en el parque Lincoln, donde están las estatuas de Abraham Lincoln y de Martin Luther King. Había gente paseando a sus perros, niños y adultos en bicicletas por la calle, otros trotando y unos cuantos navegando pequeños modelos náuticos en unos espejos de agua. También había un parque grandísimo con juegos modernos donde oía a niños hablando inglés y veía a otros usando kipás y rizos en las sienes.



On Father's Day, Ulises and Pilar, some friends of ours, invited us to a restaurant in Polanco for brunch. I had never been in that part of the city. I had passed by that neighborhood, but had never been there.


I thought at some point that I was in a big city in the States. We were in the Lincoln Park where there's a statute of Abraham Lincoln and another one of Martin Luther King. There were people walking their dogs, jogging, children and adults riding their bikes on the street, people sailing model boats, and a huge modern playground where I heard children speaking English and saw boys wearing sidelocks and kippas.

El viaje

Acapulco está a tres horas y media de la Cd. de México (ese es el tiempo que hicimos de regreso a la Cd. de México en un día sin tráfico). Pero de ida nos tardamos SEIS horas en llegar (ya se imaginarán cómo estaba la carretera). Lo bueno es que las niñas íban muy emocionadas y eso sirvió para que el viaje no se les hiciera tan pesado. Aunque nosotros no nos salvamos de escuchar a cada rato: "ya llegamos? ya llegamos?" Pero bueno, el caso es que durante nuestra estancia nos la pasamos de maravilla.

Acapulco is a three and a half hour drive from Mexico City (that´s what we did when we drove back to Mexico City on a day with no traffic.) But since we left to Acapulco on the first day of Spring break, it took us SIX hours to get there. What helped to make the trip less tiring was that the girls were really excited to be together and to be going to the beach. But that didn't stop them from asking: "are we there yet? are we there yet?" every 10 minutes. But we all had a wonderful time during our stay.

En el DF / In México City

La primera noche la pasamos en casa de Marina y de Tomás. Teníamos pensado hablarle a algunos amigos para verlos esa noche o quedar de verlos regresando de Acapulco, pero Diego perdió su celular en el aeroupuerto así que sólo vimos a Carlos, el primo de Tomás y Diego.
We spent our first night at Tomas and Marina´s house. We were going to call some friends to see them that night or after our trip to Acapulco, but Diego lost his cellphone at the airport, so we only got to see Carlos, Tomás and Diego´s cousin.

A las 10 de la noche, parecía que las niñas se íban a dormir.

At 10 PM, we thought that the girls were tired and were ready to go to bed.


Pero sólo Isabel se durmió. Carmen y Danae, seguían despiertas a la una de la mañana.

But only Isabel went to bed. Carmen and Danae were still awake at 1 AM.

Spring break

Acabamos de regresar de nuestras vacaciones de Semana Santa, unas de las mejores de en mucho tiempo. Aunque he de admitir que antes de irnos pensé que ir a Acapulco en estas fechas no era muy buena idea, pero como íbamos a ir con Tomás, mi cuñado; su esposa y su hija, a un depa frente al mar, pensamos que a las niñas les encantaría estar en la playa y ver a su prima que no veían desde el año pasado.

El caso es que el viaje superó con mucho las expectativas. Por primera vez en años, fueron unas vacaciones en todo el sentido de la palabra. Relax total. No tuve que preocuparme de las comidas, ni por buscarles actividades a las niñas o jugar con ellas. Se la pasaron jugando en la alberca o en la playa y yo pude leer y leer y leer. No teníamos acceso a Internet, así que estuve leyendo material impreso. Estuve hojeando revistas, leyendo el periódico y lo mejor es que pude leer dos novelas.

We just came back from our Spring Break vacation. It was one of the best vacations I´ve ever had. I have to admit though that I thought that going to Acapulco for spring break was the craziest idea ever. But since we were going with Tomas, Diego´s youngest brother; his wife; and his daughter, to an apartment by the beach, we thought that the girls would be happy to spend some time with their cousin that they hadn´t seen in a year.

Well, the girls had a blast. And, for the first time in ages, I had a relaxing time. I didn´t have to worry about meals, or about the girls -because they were having fun at the beach and in the pool. And all I did was read, read and read. We didn´t have access to Internet, but that was good in a way. I got to browse some magazines, read the newspaper and even though I suffered withdrawal syndrome the first two days, it was gone after I found a book to read. Actually, I read two books. That was the best part.

Cumpleanhos de Diego// Diego´s Birthday

El martes fue cumpleanhos de Diego. Ese dia tempranito le cantamos las manhanitas y le regalamos un CD. A la hora de la comida, Carmen le dio una tarjeta que le hizo en la escuela y sugirio que fueramos a un restaurant chino que le gusta a Diego, para festejarlo. Comimos muy rico, pero no hubo pastel. Yo pensaba hacerlo este fin de semana. Pero al final, terminamos comprandolo.


Last Tuesday was Diego´s birthday. We gave him a CD and Carmen made him a card. After school, Carmen suggested to go to a Chinese restaurant that Diego likes, to celebrate his birthday. We had a nice dinner, but we didn´t have cake that day. I was planning to make one on the weekend, but today we ended up buying one at the store.
