Listos para Navidad?/ Getting ready for Xmas?

Aun no empieza diciembre y ya por todos lados se ven Santacloses, monos de nieve y demás cosas alusivas a la Navidad. Las tiendas pusieron la mercancia de la temporada desde hace un mes, varias casas ya tienen adornos navideños y la ciudad comienza a verse roja por las nochebuenas. Nunca había visto tantas.

It's not December yet, but everywhere we go we see a Santa Claus, a snowman and many other Christmas stuff. The stores have Xmas merchandise since last month, several houses have already their Xmas decorations all set up, and there's red all over the city. There are so many ponsettias, I've never seen that many in my life.

Nosotros todavía no adornamos la casa, aunque Carmen ya desde hace un par de semanas está pide y pide que lo hagamos. Quizá este fin de semana. Lo que ya empezamos a hacer son manualidades. Empezamos con unos adornitos de masa con sal. No salieron como esperaba (quizá porque las hice en el microondas o porque Isabel usó demasiada pintura), pero las niñas se entretuvieron un rato pintándolas. Y uds. ya están alistándose para la Navidad?

We haven't decorated our house yet, but Carmen has been asking us to do it for the past two weeks. We may do it over the weekend. What we have already been doing are some crafts. We did some salt dough ornaments but they didn't turn out as I expected (maybe it was because I baked them in the microwave, or maybe because Isabel used too much paint). Anyhow, the girls had a goof time painting them. And what about you, are you getting ready for the Holidays?

abuelita Rosi/grandma Rosi

Rosi es la suegra de Marco, un amigo de La Paz que vive hace tiempo acá en Morelia. El fue quien le prestó a Diego su casa en lo que Diego encontraba una para nosotros. Como Marco andaba de sabático cuando Diego llegó, lo recibieron sus suegros y le estuvieron echando la mano. Cuando llegamos las niñas y yo, fuimos a conocerlos y rápidamente Isabel adoptó a Rosi como abuelita. La hicimos abuela antes de tiempo porque Marco y Dani aún no tienen niños. Pero las niñas están encantadas con tener otra abuelita por acá. Les gusta pasar a saludarla, jugar con Mau (el hijo de Rosi), ver a Toto (aunque les da miedo porque es un perro enorme), comer dulces y ver la tele. También estábamos llendo a que Carmen aprendiera a bordar, pero eso más bien fue el pretexto para ir más seguido porque el bordado va bastante lento. Hoy dijo que mañana iba a retomar el bordado. A ver.
Rosi is Marco's mother-in-law. Marco is a friend from La Paz who has been living in Morelia for a while. He was the one who told Diego we could live in his house while we were looking for one. But when Diego arrived, Marco was out of town, so his in laws received him and helped him a lot. When the girls and I arrived, we went to meet them and Isabel adopted Rosi as her grandma. She isn't a grandma yet. Dani and Marco don't have any children yet. But the girls love having another grandma here in town. They like to visit her, play with Mau (Rosi's son), see Toto (but from the gates because his a really big dog and they are afraid of him), eat candies and watch tv. We were also going to Rosi's house because Carmen wanted to learn to sew. Rosi told her that she would teach her to do some needlework and Carmen was really excited but this excitment lasted only one afternoon. Yesterday she said that she was going to work on her embroidery. We'll see!

Eduardo y Eva

Hace unos días estuvieron visitándonos Eduardo y Eva. Edu, el hermano mayor de Diego, vino a presentar su novela y se dieron una escapadita a Morelia. Las niñas se la pasaron muy bien con sus tíos y eso que no los conocían. Bueno, Carmen conoció a Edu cuando tenía 2 años y medio, pero pues de eso hace tanto tiempo que ya no se acordaba. En esta foto están las niñas con Eva. No tenían ni 5 min. de conocerla y ya estaban juegue y juegue con ella. Y se la pasaban llamándola si se les escapaba.

Eduardo and Eva came to visit us for a few days. Edu, Diego's oldest brother, came to Mexico to present his novel but came to Morelia to see us. The girls had a great time with their aunt and uncle even though they didn't know them. Well, Carmen met Edu when she was 2 years old but that was a long time ago and she didn't remember him.
Here are the girls with Eva. They had just met her and they were playing and playing with her. They just wanted to be with her all the time and kept calling her if she were to leave them.


Y en ésta, al pobre tío, le tocó estar corriendo alrededor de una fuente con la incansable Isa que se la pasaba diciendo "má co" que quiere decir "a seguir corriendo", "a correr más". A todos nos tocó correr con ella, pero el tío era el preferido, y la Isa no se cansaba.

And in this picture, poor uncle Edu had to run around a fountain with Isa. She just kept saying "má co" which means "more running". We all got to run with her but her uncle was the favorite and she just didn't get tired of running.

Las niñas se pusieron tristes cuando llego la hora de despedirnos de ellos, pero ojalá que no pasen cuatro años antes de que volvamos a verlos. A ver si el próximo año nos vamos a España a visitarlos.

The girls were sad when we had to say good bye but hopefully we will see them soon. We would like to go to visit them next year in Spain. But let's see if we have the money to do so

mega ofrenda y catrinas

El 2 de noviembre se celebra en México el día de muertos y aquí en Michoacán la fiesta es en grande. Desde el 31 de octubre se ponen afuera de los cementerios, los puestos de flores de todos colores aunque predominan las cempasuchitls naranjas y rojas.

Habíamos pensado ir a Pátzcuaro en esos días, pero como Isabel todavía andaba algo enferma no fuimos. Pero el fin de semana pasado fuimos al centro de aquí de Morelia y todavía alcanzamos a ver una ofrenda que pusieron en una calle cerrada al tráfico. Las catrinas no sólo estaban a lo largo de esta calle sino esparcidas por la plaza del kiosko a un costado de la catedral.

On November the 2nd, Mexicans celebrate the day of the Dead and here in Michoacán this is a huge celebration. On the 31st of October, outside of the cementeries, people start selling flowers of a variety of colors but the cempasuchitl flowers are the ones that predominate.

Back in September we thought that it would be a good idea to go to Pátzcuaro on the day of the Dead, but at the end we didn't go because Isabel was a bit sick. But during the weekend, we went to Morelia's downtown and an altar was still up. There were "catrinas" (skeletons) leading you to the altar in this street but you could see them also in the park that is next to the Cathedral.

Ready to go to kidzania


Esta fue una de las pocas cosas que Carmen disfruto en la ciudad de los niños. Annete y Andrés si disfrutaron la ida, se la pasaron "trabajando", pero no pude tomar más fotos porque Isabel estaba asustada pues el lugar esta muy oscuro.

This was one of the few activities that Carmen enjoyed. Annete and Andrés did enjoy the trip and "worked" a lot, but I couldn't take more pictures because Isabel was scared. The place was a little bit dark.

No Halloween

Aunque las niñas estaban listas para ir a pedir halloween, este año no fuimos. Las niñas no quisieron porque se asustaron. El sábado pasado estuvimos con mi hermano en Toluca y los niños en su fraccionamiento iban a pedir halloween ese día. Carmen e Isabel se visitieron muy entusiasmadas para ir con sus primos, pero justo antes de salir a pedir dulces, en lo que esperábamos a que salieran todos de la casa, el vecino abrió la puerta y salió disfrazado con una máscara de diablo que asustó muchísimo a la pobre de Isabel que estaba enfrente de esa casa jugando. Carmen no se asustó tanto pero no se le antojó salir sin Isabel y sin su mamá. Así que nos quedamos viendo una película que les gustó mucho. La verdad eso estuvo mucho mejor pues Isabel traía un poco de fiebre.

Y ayer tampoco quisieron salir a pedir dulces aquí en el fraccionamiento. Cuando llegamos a casa a que se alistaran para salir, les tocó ver a unos niños disfrazados y decidieron quedarse en casa.

Even though the kids were ready to go trick or treating, the girls didn't go this year because they got scared. Last Saturday we went to Toluca to visit my brother and the kids in his neighborhood were going to trick or treat that night. Carmen and Isabel got dressed in their costumes. They were really excited to go with their cousins, but just when we were about to leave the house, the next door neighbor opened the door and came out wearing a really scary mask of the devil. Isabel happened to be playing in front of his door and she got REALLY scared. Carmen didn't get too scared but she didn't want to go out without us. So, we stayed home watching a movie that they enjoyed. To tell you the truth that was way better because Isabel was running a fever.

And yesterday, they didn't want to go trick or treating, either. When we got home so they could get ready they saw some kids that were wearing scary costumes and both of them decided to stay home.
