Isabel's 8th birthday party

 

Today is Isabel's 8th birthday. Since it is during the summer break, we celebrated it a month ago with her friends from school.

Hoy es el cumpleaños de Isabel. Pero como es durante las vacaciones de verano, se lo celebramos hace un mes con sus amigas de la escuela.

They had fun doing crafts and some "belly" dance. They ate pizza, decorated their cupcakes and had a blast.

Hicieron manualidades. Se divirtieron con el baile de las panzas. Comieron pizza y decoraron sus pastelitos.

Carmen's grade 6 closing ceremony//Graduación de primaria

Today was Carmen's grade 6 closing ceremony, but she couldn't be there. She left this morning to spend the summer in Mexico. This was really hard for her. She had many plans and wanted to be with her friends this day.

For me, it was weird being at the school and having teary eyes listening to other kids' speeches when my daughter was not there. I was not planning to go, but Carmen had asked me to go to ask her friends to sign her yearbook, so I went. And I'm glad I did. It was a nice ceremony. The speeches were great, some were funny and others were moving. It was nice to feel that Carmen was there even though she wasn't. Her friends mentioned her in their speeches, she was called to receive her certificate and to read her speech (a friend of hers read it on her behalf) and I saw her happy and all smiles in the pictures of their end-of-the-year trip that were shown.

Congratulations, Carmen! And mission accomplished, got all your friends to sign your yearbook.

Hoy fue la ceremonia de graduación de 6to de primaria pero Carmen no pudo estar ahí. Hoy en la mañana se fue a México a pasar las vacaciones. Esta situación fue bastante dura para ella. Tenía muchos planes con sus amigas y quería estar con ellas hoy.

Para mi fue algo raro estar en la escuela con lagrimas en los ojos al escuchar a los niños leer sus discursos y que Carmen no estuviera ahí. Yo no tenía pensado ir, pero Carmen me pidió que fuera para recoger su anuario y pedirle a sus amigos que se lo firmaran, así que fui. Y que bueno que lo hice. Fue una ceremonia muy linda. Los discursos fueron buenos, unos eran divertidos y otros, conmovedores. Fue lindo sentir que Carmen estaba presente aunque no lo estuviera al escuchar a sus amigos mencionarla en sus discursos, escuchar su nombre cuando la llamaron para recibir su certificado y dar su discurso (una amiga de ella de 5to de primaria lo leyó en su representación) y verla feliz y contenta en las fotos del viaje de fin de año que proyectaron antes de clausurar la ceremonia.

Felicidades, Carmen! Y misión cumplida, todos tus amigos firmaron tu anuario.

Remembering the Titanic // Recordando al Titanic

There have been many events going on here in Halifax to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic.

One of them was tonight. It was called Titanic Eve - Night of the Bells.

This event started with a candlelight procession at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic which has a permanent exhibit of the Titanic (we visited it last summer.)

The procession was supposed to end at 12:27 AM with a minute of silence and flares to symbolize the Titanic's call for help.

I didn't go to the event, but I thought I was going to be able to see from my home the signal flares lit up the night sky. But I guess I was wrong. I didn't see anything, even though we have a clear view of Halifax Harbour.

Han habido varios eventos aquí en Halifax para conmemorar el aniversario 100 del hundimiento del Titanic y recordar a sus muertos.

Uno de ellos, Titanic Eve - Night of the Bells, fue esta noche.

El evento inició con una procesión que salió desde un museo que tiene una exhibición permanente del Titanic (nosotros la visitamos el verano pasado).

El evento terminaba a las 12:27 AM con un minuto de silencio y luces de bengala que se iban a lanzar para simbolizar la llamada de auxilio que pidió el Titanic.

Yo no asistí a este evento pero pensé que iba a poder ver desde mi casa los cohetes de señales cuando iluminaran el cielo. Pero creo que me equivoqué. No vi absolutamente nada, a pesar de que tenemos vista al puerto de Halifax.

A snowy Easter Sunday//Una Pascua nevada

Even though spring is already here, last Sunday we had a snowy day.

A pesar de que ya llegó la primavera, el domingo pasado nos cayó una nevada.

Visiting the Grossology exhibit in Halifax

Three years ago when we were in Gainesville for a semester, I wanted to take the girls to the Grossology exhibit, but at the end we didn't go. I don't remember why.

Anyway, now, 3 years later, the Grossology: The impolite science of the human body exhibit is in Halifax and we finally visited it. A friend invited us and several friends went there, too.

The girls had fun playing with all the interactive exhibits, except with the "You stink" exhibit where you have to smell 4 different body odours. No one wanted to smell those.

We also visited the permanent exhibits and stayed there until we were asked to leave. We were there for 2 hours, which is a lot considering it is a small museum.It was a great afternoon. Thank you, María José for organizing it!

Hace 3 años, cuando estuvimos en Gainesville por un semestre, quería llevar a las niñas a ver una exposición llamada "Grossology" que en español sería algo así como "Asquerología" o "la ciencia de lo asqueroso" pues es una exhibición sobre mocos, vómito, eructos, olores corporales, etc.

En fin, en aquella ocasión por una cosa o por otra no pude llevarlas. Ya no recuerdo por qué. Pero ahora, 3 años después, la exposición está aquí en Halifax y por fin pudimos ir. Una amiga nos invitó a nosotros y a otras amigas.

Las niñas se divirtieron jugando con todas las cosas interactivas que había, excepto con el de los 4 olores corporales que había que adivinar de dónde provenían. Nadie quiso olerlos.

También visitamos las exposiciones permanentes y nos quedamos ahi hasta que nos corrieron. Pasamos una tarde muy agradable. Gracias, María José por organizarla!

Blogging again

El verano que llegamos a Halifax intenté resucitar el blog, pero sin mucho éxito; sólo publiqué una entrada. Hoy otra vez, a petición del público (Carmen e Isabel), se reabre este espacio virtual.

In the summer that we arrived in Halifax, I tried to start blogging again. But I only managed to publish an entry. Now, since the audience (Carmen and Isabel) is asking for it, we're re-opening this virtual space.

Point Pleasant Park

In August, we went to Point Pleasant Park (which is on the southern tip of Halifax) to see two plays by Shakespeare by the Sea Theatre Company: Treasure Island and Twelfth Night. The girls had a great time and so did we. We hadn't gone to a play in a long time.

The first time we went, we had time during the break to visit the Prince of Wales Tower, built in 1796. But at the end of the performance, we had to run back to the bus stop since it was 3PM and we hadn't had any lunch and didn't have time to walk around the park. The second time we had more time to walk a little before the bus came and we found the beach. Since we hadn't eaten this time either, we had to go. We want to go back another time, but since it is getting windy and chilly now, I think we'll have to wait for next summer to visit the park again.

En agosto fuimos a Point Pleasant Park (en la punta sur de Halifax) a ver dos obras de teatro: La Isla del Tesoro y Noche de Epifanía. A las niñas les gustó mucho y a nosotros también. Ya teníamos tiempo de no ir al teatro.

La primera vez que fuimos, pudimos visitar la torre del Príncipe de Wales, construida en 1796. Pero al final de la obra tuvimos que salir corriendo a alcanzar el autobús porque ya era tarde y no habíamos comido. Así que no pudimos caminar por el parque. La segunda vez, tuvimos tiempo de caminar un poco y encontramos la playa. Pero como tampoco habíamos comido antes de venir, nos tuvimos que ir. Queremos volver al parque y a la playa, pero como ya está haciendo mucho viento y la temperatura está bajando, creo que tendremos que esperar al próximo verano.

And we're back!

After several months of living offline we're back to our virtual world. Many things have happened while I haven't been keeping our blog. We have taken pictures of some of those things, but not many. At least not as many as I used to take. And the few pictures that we have taken are in different folders in my computer or in Diego's, or in facebook, and we have also lost some. So, it's time to bring back some order to our lives and therefore I'm bringing this blog back to life. But the main reason for having our blog up and running is to help us keep in touch with family and friends, since not all of them are in facebook.


Después de varios meses desconectados de nuestro mundo virtual, estamos de vuelta. Muchas cosas han pasado. Hemos tomado fotos de algunas de esas cosas, pero no muchas. Desde que dejé de escribir en el blog, dejé de tomar fotos. Y las pocas fotos que hemos tomado están desperdigadas en folders diferentes en mi computadora o en la de Diego, o en facebook, y algunas cuantas se nos han perdido. Por eso, para ordenar un poco nuestros recuerdos, creo que es tiempo de resucitar el blog. Pero la razón principal de abrir nuevamente el blog, es para seguir en contacto con la familia y los amigos, pues no todos están en facebook.

Back home // de vuelta en casa

Regresamos a México hace dos semanas, cuando la gripa porcina -hoy llamada gripa de la influenza humana- estaba en su apogeo, los vuelos a México se estaban cancelando, las clases para todos los niveles, desde guarderías hasta universidades a nivel nacional suspendieron clases, las noticias sólo hablaban de esta enfermedad, los restaurantes del DF estaban cerrados, la gente hacía compras de pánico, etc. La verdad yo no tenía miedo de volver, más bien tenía miedo de no poder volver. Pero al llegar al aeropuerto de la Cd. de México, debo admitir que dude haber tomado la decisión correcta. El aeropuerto estaba vacío a las 7 de la tarde. Fue como llegar a una ciudad pequeña a medianoche.

Esa noche nos quedamos a dormir en casa de unos amigos; y al día siguiente volamos a Tuxtla. Todos estábamos muy contentos de estar de vuelta en casa. Acá las cosas parecían estar normal. No había mucha gente en la calle, pero no era tan impactante como en la Cd. de México. Aquí había más tráfico que allá y eso ya es muchísimo decir. Pero un día antes de que se reanudaran las clases, se suspendieron por una semana más, porque empezaron a aparecer brotes de influenza en el estado. Carmen se puso muy triste. Ella tenía unas ganas enormes de volver a la escuela para ver a sus amigas, pero bueno ya mañana es el gran día de su regreso.

We came back to Mexico two weeks ago, when the swine flu was at its peak, flights were being cancelled, school for all levels, from daycares to universities, had been suspended, news were mostly about this illness, all restaurants in Mexico City were closed, people were in panic, etc. I really was not afraid of comig back, but I must say that I did question myself if I had made the right decision when we arrived at Mexico City´s airport. It was empty. It was like arriving at a small city at midnight, and it was only 7PM.
We stayed at some friends house and the next day, we flew to Tuxtla. We were all really happy to be back home. Here things seemed normal, but a day before classes started, they were suspended for another week. Carmen was really sad. She really wanted to go back to school and see her friends. But tomorrow is the big day for her. She can´t wait.

Yo todavía no termino mi tesis y en todos estos días que las niñas no han ido a la escuela no he podido trabajar en ella. Espero que ahora que regresen a clases pueda terminar dos capítulos que tengo empezados. Y, a finales de junio me regreso a EU a terminarla. Espero por lo menos tener un borrador completo de la tesis para principios de agosto. Por esta razón, este blog dejará de actualizarse por un par de meses.

I still haven´t finished my dissertation. And I haven´t had time to work here. Hopefully, now that the girls will go back to school I would be able to finish two chapters I haven´t finished. And, at the end of June will be going back to the States to try to finish this PhD once and for all. Well, I´ll be happy if at least I have a complete draft of my dissertation by the end of July. For this reason, this blog will not be updated for a couple of months.
